Another 12 children were successfully returned home from Russian occupation.

According to Daria Zarivna, advisor to the head of the Presidential Office, the occupying authorities threatened to take the children to an orphanage if they did not attend a Russian propaganda school.

◾️One boy was forcibly registered as a conscript. At school, he was humiliated for speaking Ukrainian, and his older brother was taken and tortured.

◾️Another 10-year-old boy was almost taken away from his grandmother while attempting to leave on their own. The occupiers separated them and took the child to an unknown location. Thanks to the help of Ukrainian partners, an evacuation was organized. Now he is safely back with his grandmother.

The passport-holders are among a larger group of 16 people who successfully paid for Maltese citizenship despite being politically exposed individuals, or who later appeared on sanctions lists or were convicted of crimes.

Malta is the last EU country that still offers citizenship for sale, drawing ire from the European Commission, which has taken the country to the European Court of Justice in a bid to halt the scheme.

The commission has argued the scheme “undermines both the essence and the integrity of EU citizenship”. The court is expected to rule on Tuesday.

War creates incredible stories. Some time ago, two Ukrainian paratroopers on Russian territory, during a massive Russian assault, were captured by two Russian assault troops who suddenly jumped into their position. There was intense shelling, and the enemy managed to succeed.

In a small shelter, the four of them sat together and spent several days there. Around them, drones, artillery, and mortars continuously struck. The Russians reported to their command that they had taken the Ukrainians prisoner and received an order—to kill the captives and move forward.

However, the Russian assault troops could not bring themselves to kill those who were sitting beside them. They decided to escort our soldiers into captivity instead. But as soon as they stepped out and started moving toward the Russian side, Russian artillery began heavily shelling them, as retreating during an assault is forbidden for Russian troops. So, all four of them returned to the shelter.

The Russian commanders demanded they advance, but it was impossible since our drones and artillery were working effectively. Very soon, the entire Russian assault unit was eliminated, except for the two who were sitting with our soldiers.

And then the captured Ukrainians proposed to the Russian assault troops to surrender as prisoners, explaining that Ukrainian commanders do not execute either their own soldiers or captives, and their lives would be guaranteed. The Russians agreed—none of their comrades, with whom they had gone on the assault, were able to establish communication anymore. It turned out that the only chance for them to survive was provided by the captured Ukrainians. At that point, the Russians returned the weapons and radios to the Ukrainian soldiers, who then contacted their command and, at the right moment, led the Russian assault troops to a rear position.

Since the Russian assault troops behaved honorably, did not kill our soldiers, and since they did not violate Ukrainian laws, surrendered on Russian territory, and provided valuable information, they were treated with respect. They weren’t even tied up. I saw them. Now, in due time, they will calmly go through a prisoner exchange and keep their lives. I will not show videos of them or disclose details without their consent, even though the story would be brilliant. I hope that someday such an opportunity will arise.

And the two Ukrainian hero paratroopers, who so unexpectedly captured two Russian prisoners, returned to their position and continued carrying out their combat mission.

I believe the time will come when we will also be able to record an interview with them.

The Trump-Supreme Court battle is not really the crisis.

The crisis is here now. Trump is enacting an insidious coordinated attack on our institutions of democratic accountability, designed to crater democracy before next fall.

1/ A long 🧵to explain the plan & how we stop it.

2/ First, just know that MAGA has given up on democracy. Wish it weren’t true but it is. They would rather MAGA rule forever than run a fair election where a Democrat might win. This isn’t some vengeance campaign. It’s a brazen effort to end democracy.

3/ MAGA doesn’t want democracy because they want power forever. But also to get away with the thievery and corruption. A true democracy would hold Trump accountable for the mass scale corruption — the crypto coin, the insider trading, the Musk self dealing etc.

4/ The modern, time-tested way to destroy a democracy is NOT a coup or burning down the Parliament or a public confrontation with the judiciary. It’s a slow methodical campaign to weaken the structures of accountability necessary for the political opposition to win elections.

5/ ELEMENT 1: The Legitimization of Political Violence: Every good authoritarian uses the threat of violence to keep critics silent. That’s what the Jan. 6 pardons are about. Lisa Murkowski’s public worries this week about “retaliation” are chilling.

6/ ELEMENT 2: Silence the Press. Trump does this in two ways. First, co-opt the owners of the press (Bezos, Zuckerberg, Musk, etc.). Second, through harassment (eg AP and “Gulf of America” or FCC investigations).

7/ ELEMENT 3: Silence the Protectors of the Rule of Law. In free societies, lawyers guard our rights. Despots can more easily trample our rights if the lawyers are silenced. That’s why Trump is forcing the big firms to sign effective loyalty oaths.

8/ ELEMENT 4: Silence the Universities. Two things happen on university campuses: youth protest and the guarding of objective truth. Neither are allowed in an autocracy. Thus, Trump’s illegal campaign to force campuses to crush dissent.

9/ ELEMENT 5: Silence the Private Sector. The tariffs are a means to force every business to get on Trump’s good side (ie zero public dissent) in exchange for relief. The withholding of federal funds from non-profits forces these orgs to stay quiet too.

10/ ELEMENT 6: Cut Off Funding for the Opposition. Autocrats like Orban allow the opposition to exist, but starve it. Trump is moving to shut down non-profits and donor collectives that oppose his policies; and ActBlue, the way $$ flow to Democrats.

11/ This is all happening so fast it’s hard for the public to see it all as part of one plan. But it is. And the press, lawyers, colleges and opposition political groups don’t have to be DESTROYED in order for this plan to work.

12/ They just have to be weakened enough so the tools of accountability don’t work anymore. The press can’t tell enough truth. The lawyers won’t protect our rights. Campus protest disappears. Opposition funding dries up. We still have elections. But the regime always wins.

13/ How do we stop it? First, though solidarity. Each set of institutions can’t let the regime pick one off from each others. The legal profession failed miserably at this this, but the universities can model a collective strategy to fight back and win.

14/ Second, through mass mobilization. When hundreds of thousands of people rally against this kind of assault on democracy, history shows it works. There is a strange, magic power to mass activation which makes supporters of the regime start to jump ship.

15/ Third, through risk taking by political leaders. No citizen will take the risk to mobilize if leaders are playing it safe. This means speaking daily truth to the regime and taking tactical risks (like voting against the CR or boycotting the SOTU would have been).

16/ I believe those three steps, taken together, will arrest Trump’s assault. But if it doesn’t, then civil disobedience.

🛑 What Russia gets under Trump’s plan:

▪️“De jure” recognition by the US of Russian control over Crimea.

▪️“De facto” recognition of Russia’s occupation of almost all of Luhansk region and occupied parts of Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions.

▪️A promise that Ukraine will not become a member of NATO. The text notes that Ukraine could become part of the EU.

▪️The lifting of sanctions imposed since 2014.

▪️Intensification of economic cooperation with the US, particularly in the energy and industrial sectors.

🇺🇦 What Ukraine gets under Trump’s plan:

▪️“Reliable security guarantees” from a special group of European countries. The document is vague about how this peacekeeping operation will function, and makes no mention of U.S. participation.

▪️Return of a small part of the Kharkiv region that was occupied by Russia.

▪️Unimpeded passage of the Dnipro River, which runs along the front line in parts of southern Ukraine.

▪️Compensation and reconstruction assistance, although the document does not say where the funding will come from.

☢️ The plan also contains other elements. In particular, it states that ZNPP will be considered Ukrainian territory, but will be operated by the US, and electricity from it will be supplied to both Ukraine and Russia.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 The US Secretary of State has denied that Washington has resumed the investigation into the abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia.

Marco Rubio said that the administration had not canceled the decision to suspend the Conflict Observatory initiative, which was led by the Yale University Humanities Research Laboratory.

“The program has not been restored and is not funded. It was part of the cuts we made. But we have secured the data and ensured that we have it and can share it with any relevant authorities. We will be able to announce this [decision] next week,” the official said. In March, WP wrote that the Trump administration had terminated the project and thus banned the transfer of evidence to prosecutors in criminal cases, including the illegal movement of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine.

Later, The Washington Post reported that Conflict Observatory could operate for another six weeks before completing the transfer of its data to Europol.

Estonia has detained a Russian shadow fleet tanker for the first time.

The Kiwala tanker was heading toward the Russian port of Ust-Luga without cargo when it entered the Tallinn Bay without flying a flag and in violation of sanctions regulations.

The vessel falls under EU sanctions as well as those of at least three other countries. Moreover, the tanker was sailing without a national flag — a violation that makes it illegal for the ship to navigate in open waters.

After being detained, the crew presented a certificate claiming the ship was registered under the flag of the Republic of Djibouti. However, a Djiboutian official stated that the tanker is not listed in their registry. The vessel’s ultimate beneficial owner is also unknown.

Estonian authorities are conducting a full inspection of the ship, including its technical condition and documentation.
