🍊 Sweet oranges per se, were not in Europe until the 15-16th century when brought by Genoese and Portuguese from their travels to Asia, however, we have had before around the Mediterranean area something called ''citrons'' (Citrus medica) that ancient Romans used as remedies for poisoning ailments according to the description of Theophrastus, ‘’It is also useful to improve the breath, for if one boils the inner part of the fruit in a dish or squeezes it into the mouth in some other medium, it makes the breath more pleasant.’’
🍊 During the Middle Ages, the citron was used for treating seasickness, scurvy while also being considered an antibiotic (the oil of cedrate-limonele). While the very first mentioned origin of a citron-type fruit appears in the Himalayan foothills about 8 million years ago, nāraṅga was the Sanskrit word for orange tree (funnily enough, naranja means orange in Spanish), these oranges were finally available in the European markets around 15th century.
🍊 The Italian city of Savona has records of the first mention of sweet oranges in Europe, from 1471-1975 in a manuscript by Bartolomeo Platina written for Pope Sixtus IV. The manuscript is preserved in the Vatican Library. Spanish settlers took the fruit to Florida between 1535 and 1565, and the fruits thrived in the subtropical climate. Meanwhile, back in the Old World, Portuguese maritime explorers were about to discover an even more favourable variety of the orange.
🍊 The Portuguese were able to take control of several Asian port cities, including Goa in India. While the Portuguese were unsuccessful in taking control of the Indian Ocean trade, largely due to the fact that they had nothing to sell, they did bring an even more delicious variety of the sweet orange back to Europe. in 1498, Vasco da Gama writes and describe them as “very good oranges, much better than those from Portugal”. By 1646 sweet oranges were well known and commonly enjoyed around the Mediterranean.
🍊 While Christians like to explain oranges as being associated with St. Nicholas helping those in need and representing gold, the more realistic explanation of why we associate oranges with Christmas has to do more with oranges being a fruit for the aristocrats 1700-1800s, those that afforded oranges and bought them, usually ladies of good family during wintertime. Trading ships would arrive to British and other Northern European ports with sweet oranges from southern lands, sometimes sailors would throw a fruit or two to the children waiting by the dock and waving to the incoming trading ships with goods for the richest. Oranges were a luxury good around this time of the year, making it a very special Christmas present in the stocking indeed.
Stay tuned to my next post as it will continue with a little story from the 1700s that starts with a couple oranges.

Two days ago I made thick hot chocolate just because... autumn.
In a small saucepan:
- 1 tbsp Valrhona pure cacao
- 2 tbsp Valrhona Guanaja 70% dark chocolate
- 2 tbsp raw coconut sugar
- 250 ml - 300 ml (depending how thick you want the consistency) milk
- a pinch cardamom
- a pinch Ceylon cinnamon
Serve with a top of whipped cream and sprinkle a little more of the spices on top. You can also dip a buttery and airy croissant in or enjoy it by itself. Do not dip deep fried foods in (like churros 🙁 no good for us).
If you wonder why I use Valrhona brand specifically:
1. Because they are premium French, local luxury chocolate.
2. From beans of a single year's harvest from a specific plantation, primarily the Grand Crus which is grown in South America, Oceania and the Caribbean.
3. Tested for mould.
4. Tested for heavy metals.

What pacifiers would I recommend?
👉 Pacifiers made out of silicone, in one piece (as there are no joints or cracks for bacteria to hide and remain)
👉 No strings or comfort toys attached to them as this will worsen breaking the habit (they will associate playing and comfort with pacifier)
👉 Try different ones to make sure it fits your baby’s mouth, one size cannot fit all
👉 I personally recommend breast-shaped ones instead of the typical ‘’orthodontic’’ ones, this is because it will be easier for the child to wean off it, as they might also slowly wean off the breast if they start preferring solids, this will also allow their mouth to develop without impacts (for the palate to not become more narrow)
👉 Brands I recommend: Ninni Pacifiers because they are extremely alike the breast and much safer than anything in the market (you can shop for them at ninnico.com or from Europe from lactationhub.com) and Dr. Brown’s HappyPaci Silicone Soother (found at any pharmacy online and offline in most EU countries)
What to do after ending the pacifier use?
👉 Myofunctional therapy. This will help their airway changes, changes in palate, mouth, jaw, tongue position, swallowing, etc. You can either ask for help from your dentist or try to figure our yourself after getting used to the meaning of myofunctional therapy and your child’s weak spots.

>> Propolis.
I talked about it on my Twitter this spring as I was mentioning how my own father (as a doctor) was giving me propolis to chew quite regularly as a little child right before spring so I would avoid any possible allergies. And never dealt with them.
Propolis is ''bee-glue''. It is a natural mixture produced by honeybees from different substances that they collect from flowers and trees. The ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians were aware of the healing properties of propolis and made extensive use of it as a medicine.
- Potent anti-tumour thanks to 2 agents in propolis: caffeic acid phenethyl esters from poplar propolis and Artepillin C from Baccharis propolis
- Propolis extract inhibited oral candidiasis, including Candida Albicans
- It can stop both HSV-1 and HSV-2 from reproducing. A systematic review and meta-analysis of people with genital herpes and cold sores compared propolis to Zovirax
- Propolis extracts can naturally prevent & shorten the duration of the common cold
- It has been found to possess antiparasitic properties, fighting off Giardiasis (from people or infected food/water)
- Propolis at a dose of 500 mg x2 a day for six months resulted in a pregnancy rate of 60% compared to only 20% in the placebo group in a pilot randomised, controlled trial (DOI:10.1016/S0015-0282(03)01886-7)
Do you need more reasons to add it to your routine? 🔥
I recommend the chewable propolis bars that you can find at the herbalist. Brand doesn't matter - just organic, 100% propolis. Or extract (without alcohol) for children.

Sometimes pacifiers can be good, sometimes they can do more harm than good. It’s important to know your baby and your situation. When would it be OK with a baby under 1 year of age having a pacifier?
✅ When babies are in neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) and do not have the opportunity to have a parent 24/7 for comfort. Babies, especially undergoing procedures might need a form of soothing
✅ When a baby is undergoing a painful procedure out of need (I am strongly against circumcision so I will not even mention this barbarism in here, I am more referring to needed procedures, blood tests, etc)
✅ If your child has latched successfully to the breast, is eating great, gaining weight and needs extra soothing (if you cannot wear them 24/7)
✅ To build a stronger latch to a bottle, by learning how to suck
✅ Upon over-producing milk (that is when your baby’s mouth is too full of milk and they need a break to swallow and take a break)
✅ When sleeping alone in a bed without mamma or papa around, still next to you, a pacifier were observed to significantly reduce the risk of SIDS (PMID: 16216900)
❗ Nonetheless, some babies will not want a pacifier and if that is the case, do not force them on your baby.
- Do not use pacifiers to over-extend times in between feedings
- Choose a safe pacifier and not ‘’whatever’’
- Keep it clean, wash it with warm water and keep it moist-free
- If pacifier falls out of your baby’s mouth while asleep, remove it and close gently their mouth
Remove pacifier usage especially after the age of 6 months. Reduce its usage little by little to the point your baby does not depend on it anymore and be there to remove habits that appeared after pacifier use:
🔥 Close their mouth whenever this remains opened in sleep
🔥 Try to break the thumb-sucking habit

Hello everyone! I just wanted to quickly pop in to remind you of something extremely important since we are officially into winter and many of you might start supplementing with Vitamin/Hormone D3 because here in the North, let us be real, it's sort of needed. Keep these things into account:
- Vitamin/Hormone D production is not a simple/straight process, it depends on many other co-factors
- Every person is different, especially based on their origins, so Hermone D production will look different for everyone and everyone should be adjusting doses according to their needs
And now into the most important part:
- Magnesium (bisglycinate especially, as it is absorbed at 80% rate in the body) helps with metabolising Vitamin D. If your Mg levels are too low (it becomes easy to be deficient as stress depleates Mg levels and we are all stressed unless you have a perfect meditation/relaxation routine set in every day) - your body cannot activate the production of Vitamin/Hormone D.
- Vitamin K2 (especially the type of MK-7) is the responsible of activating matrix GLA protein to bind excess calcium and help with arterial health (great flow and flexibility - avoiding cardiovascular disease) so this becomes absolutely essential. p.s.: Vitamin K2 in higher doses was also observed to reduce visceral fat in postmenopausal women.
- Zinc can enhance Vitamin D activity and Vitamin D influences zinc homeostasis (so they work great and best together). Disturbance on their balance leads to cardiovascular issues, immune dysfunction, poor healing, etc. Zinc is an important enabler in the conversion of Vitamin/Hormone D from cholesterol - using your fat for proper hormonal production. Aside being key for healthy sex hormones. p.s.: This supplement comes in hand when one has ''high cholesterol'' and low serum Vitamin D.
So, are you supplementing with Vitamin D3 this winter? Then you must get in:
- Mg Bisglycinate (you are welcome to get yours at Jotunheim Nutrition (For Sweden only here, and rest of the world here)
- Vitamin K2 (MK-7), we do not have it right now at Jotunheim Nutrition but stay tuned!
- Zinc, (For Sweden only here, and the rest of the world here)
With that said, I personally like Vitamin D3 from a reliable source of Cod Liver Oil that has been least processed (you can check their simple extraction process here), and that is Rosita. We have been stocking Rosita at Jotunheim Nutrition (Sweden only) and soon is restocking time! 🌞

Yesterday I confessed something in my Instagram.
We have been secretly working on something.
💧JOTUNHEIM NUTRITION ELECTROLYTES! 💧
Long story short. Most people around me take electrolytes. Everyone needs them, especially if doing intense exercise, in hot weather, in the sauna, while or after labour (I took them while giving birth and after), ...whenever sweating lots.
While I was pregnant I was obviously trying to find a good product. It was damn impossible - why?
Most electrolytes in the market have a cheeky unbalance between sodium and potassium, which is quite 👎 ...sodium and potassium intake needs to be on an approx. 1-1 ratio so you avoid unpleasant symptoms and in worst of cases, dangerous situations. This fueled my desire to get a product out that not only would be safe but that would be optimised in comparison to all others.
⚡️⚡️So I formulated Jotunheim Nutrition Electrolytes. Victory! ⚡️⚡️
The mineral profile is top. The ingredients, as clean as they can get and nothing is hidden.
TODAY IS LAUNCH DAY! 🥳

Can you imagine that it takes roughly 17 years for health research findings to be implemented into routine practices?
> Wondering what makes us more empowered than the health system? This exactly. I have the opportunity and time to follow science and findings as they happen - I pick up the pieces and help myself or others I care about. The system?
> The system, on the other hand, will put us on protocols that are decades old. This is the fight I take with “textbook” Dietists and Nutritionists. About saturated fats, cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, red meat and colon cancer, extreme negative impacts of ultra-processed foods, vegetable oils, “protein excess”, fat-free diets, sugars, ADHD diet, candida, minerals and their associated effects on literally everything from eye health to hormonal production, fertility, eczema, psoriasis, IBS,… you name it. The knowledge on all these matters has changed drastically and still textbooks and even guidelines are not changed...
> “Translating scientific discoveries into patient benefit more quickly is a policy priority of many health research systems. Despite their policy salience, little is known about time lags and how they should be managed. This lack of knowledge puts those responsible for enabling translational research at a disadvantage.”

It is quite interesting to me how the Dental Health Association in Sweden DOES actually talk about the negative effects of fluoride in toothpaste (fluor i tandkräm) especially in children. Check the link below!
Many parents in Sweden are met with the resistance of their dentist when comes to the usage of hydroxyapatite. I myself have been told ''well, you should always use fluoride toothpaste because is the only working against cavities and prevention - there is not enough evidence with hydroxyapatite!''
and another dentist...''hydroxy- what?''
If a dentist tells you off for using hydroxyapatite and does not know the effects of fluoride on children and pregnant women, please sign off and do not visit him anymore - you could also fill a complaint on the base of unprofessionalism. He is either lying or unprofessional. I suspect the second most of the times. But dental schools that still instruct and educate their students without the knowledge of hydroxyapatite and toxicity of fluoride, are indeed lying as much is moved by companies selling fluoride-products who sponsor and promote schools, programs, seminars, courses, studies, etc.
If you are a parent visiting the dentist soon (especially in Sweden) and fear for what's coming - aka a dentist denying your knowledge on the benefits of hydroxyapatite, please SHARE THIS LINK BELOW from the Swedish Dental Health Association with them and encourage further education on the subject.
LINK HERE: https://www.tf.nu/nyhet/battre-tandhalsa-med-hydroxiapatit/
In this article, by the Dental Health Association, you can actually realise who is to blame for the fact that your dentist still thinks fluoride is ''ok'', this is, the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).
The National Board of Health and Welfare are the ones in charge of giving or retrieving a practitioner's licence.
