On Sunday, March 30, thousands of people attended mass in the Valley of the Fallen to protest against Spain's socialist government's desire to desecrate the site.
The Valley of the Fallen is one of the monumental complexes in Spain, located near the Monastery of El Escorial, 58 km from Madrid in the Guadarrama Mountains. It includes a Catholic basilica, an abbey and a memorial.
The monument was conceived during the reign of dictator Francisco Franco, as a memorial to those who died during the Civil War (1936–1939). Both Franco's supporters and supporters of the Spanish Republic are buried there.
