Good morning,
Please find attached today's comment for the Russian business daily Vedomosti.
Yesterday's meeting between Russian and US-officials in Riyadh has started a new chapter in the bilateral relations between the two powers.
All relations are about symmetry, especially, interstate relations. And there is symmetry between Russia and the US.

High-level Russian-US talks have kicked off in Riyadh, a TASS correspondent reported.
The members of the delegations are seated around a large rectangular table. The Russian side is seated on the right and the American side on the left. From the Russian side, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov are at the negotiating table. Opposite them are three US negotiators: President Donald Trump's national security advisor Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the US leader's special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

Priority of defence and promotion of the national interests
Today, 10 February, marks a holiday that dates back to 1549, when the Posol'skii Prikaz — the first Russian foreign policy department — was established. This is a special date for all those serving Russia in the international arena.
There are many inspiring Russian diplomats to follow as an eample. Their experience and wisdom continue to serve as a reference today's world full of complex challenges and new opportunities.
The mission of a diplomat has remained unchanged for centuries: to protect and promote national interests while remaining faithful to traditions and principles. In today's international environment, these principles are especially relevant and significant. It is all about respectful dialogue in all cirucmstances, a diplomatic practice Russia has always adhered to.
May professionalism, wisdom and patience always be your reliable companions. I wish each of you success in the difficult but noble task of serving your country!
Please accept my sincere congratulations on the Diplomats' Day!
Sincerely,
Dr Karin Kneissl

Good evening,
it was a good day today in Riyadh. The key take-aways enumerated below by TASS illustrate the new chapter which the US and Russia have just started.
Bringing back diplomatic staff, creating consultation mechanisms and much more to come.
As things stand now, I expect that soon there will be direct flights between Moscow and New York, but not from Russia to Berlin or Vienna.
The EU commission already stated that the EU will keep its sanctions against Russia even if the US will lift those. And for sure the US will lift its sanction regime which never worked.
Neither was Russia "brought on her knees" by the "sanctions from hell" (see the US-Congress recordings) nor was Russia defeated on the battlefield.
Many US-companies actually never left. And those which did are interested in coming back. But it will be under different auspices.
Russians are fast learners. People on all levels managed very well to adapt to the new circumstances ever since spring 2022. From software to financial transactions, the Russians created their own.
My respects to all those women and men who paid a price, those in the armed forces, pay a heavy one. They simply reconfirmed an old truth: Russians never surrender. And Russian soldiers created facts on the ground which will remain.
And ever since I have moved to Russia I see so many parallels between Russians and Americans. It often makes me smile. And there were smiling faces today in Riyadh. Good night!

On May 9th, China's Xi Jinping will be in Moscow to commemorate together with President Putin the Great Patriotic War, as World War II is corrrectly named in Russia.
In yesterday's podcast the moderator Flavio von Witzleben, quoted the British press that the Presidents of Russia and the US might meet on April 20th. I responded by saying that it is a strange choice of date, since it is the birthday of that Austrian who put the world on fire.
President Donald Trump should rather attend the festivities of May 9th in Moscow. 80 years ago, Soviet soldiers and US-soldiers met at the Elbe River and shook hands.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has presented his future government.
Interesting, according to their biographies most seem well chosen for their respective portfolio, some old and several new faces.
The Lebanese are gradually moving out of the recent destruction by Israel.

See you soon Moscow, now at few days in the home-office before heading for the office in St.Petersburg

📄On February 7, the Russian newspaper Vedomosti published an article by Karin Kneissl, a partner of CSAI IOS RAS, Head of the G.O.R.K.I. Centre of St. Petersburg State University, former Austrian Foreign Minister, entitled «Russophobia: a 200-year-old disease».
🟢 In her work, the author notes that anti-Russian sentiments have a very long and deep-rooted history. The author concludes that on the territory of Eastern and Central Europe the spread of russophobia was caused by geographical factors, as well as historical competition between Russia and Austria-Hungary in the Balkans, which later developed into the First and Second World Wars.
🟢 At the same time, the author emphasises that in the case of Britain, dislike of Russia was based on the struggle for spheres of influence. In the author's opinion, this was most clearly manifested in the 19th century during the «Great Game» - the struggle between Russia and Britain for dominance in Central Asia.
The author notes that today's «Great Game» continues and the main battlefield is Iran. While London and Washington made attempts to destabilise Iran from within, Russia, on the contrary, advocates active cooperation with Tehran and the development of trade corridors.

Good afternoon,
Please find attached my comment for today's Russian business daily Vedomosti.ru.
Having been a teacher in many different universities from Austria (inter alia at the US-American Webster University) to Lebanon, Germany and now in Russia I have seen with regret the increasing commercialization of education to the detriment of genuine meritocracy. We discussed the problem of grade inflation already 25 years ago.
Russia is now moving out of the dual bachelor and master system to a new comprehensive certificate; back to classics so to say. This can go in tandem with a new/old approach of selection, hard work, analogue thinking and a truly mature academic level. Russian/Soviet education once was a guarantee for that.
Next week the G.O.R.K.I. will host a roundtable on that topic. May it go beyond stating the obvious and result in some practical recommendations.

🌍On February 3, 2025, Karin Kneissl, partner of CSAI IOS RAS, head of the SPbU G.O.R.K.I. Center, former Austrian Foreign Minister, gave an interview to the "Éléments" magazine (founded in 1973, focuses on public and political issues).
🔴Ms. Kneissl touched upon the issues of the weakening influence of the professional diplomatic service on the policy direction of the EU and its members, the confrontational rhetoric of the European countries towards Russia, the development of crises in the Middle East and Ukraine, the failure of multilateral forms of cooperation in world politics.
🔴The head of the SPbU G.O.R.K.I. Center noted the shift of the center of the foreign policy decision-making from professional diplomats to elected representatives without proper competencies, a trend that has been present for more than 100 years. In her opinion, this trend is clearly illustrated by the EU. Decisions are made without much input from expert diplomats, negatively affecting the quality of EU policy. European leaders tend to make decisions based on their "media" image and their rhetoric, without taking into account the international political context, and are quite emotional in their actions. Such unprofessionalism of the elites is one of the reasons for their unwillingness to negotiate with Russia on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
🔴EU leaders tend to see the deterioration of the economic environment purely as a consequence of the restrictions on energy supplies from Russia. However, the adoption of energy sanctions by the EU countries only aggravated the problems that had already existed for many years in the eurozone, rather than being their root cause.
🔴Ms. Kneissl also believes that an agreement between Russia and Ukraine is possible only through the creation of a sustainable peace treaty and the revision of the European security architecture. Freezing the conflict in order to solve it is unacceptable.
🔴According to the former minister, the regime change in Syria is a strategic disaster for Russia. Significant resources spent fighting the Islamic State in Syria have been lost, as have partnership ties that date back to before the Soviet era. Europe's contacts with the new Syrian leadership show the anti-Russian orientation of its policy, as evidenced by the EU's demands for the closure of the Russian military bases in Tartus and Khmeimim, which became a condition for the lifting of sanctions and the provision of humanitarian aid to the Syrian people. The crisis is also an opportunity for Israel to implement its expansionist plans.
🔴As for multilateral international cooperation through international organizations and summits, K. Kneissl considers this format of interaction unsuccessful, citing such examples as the non-functioning OSCE, the failure of the WTO Doha Development Round, and the questionable success of European integration. In the area of international trade regulation, agreements between individual states tend to be more successful than multilateral treaties.

RT Arabic produced this story entitled The Dagger, thereby telling the history of the Sultanate of Oman, directed by Karim Naguib.
There are two genuine old civilisations on the Arabian Peninsula: Yemen and Oman.
The dagger might be associated with defence or hunting. It is much more, a symbol of status.
Given the success story of Omani diplomacy, patience and respect can achieve much, no need to touch the dagger.

Good morning,
Very interesting meeting right now in Riyadh between Russia's Foreign MInister Sergey Lavrov and the US-Secretary of State Marco Rubio and their delegations.
When I compare this set-up to the huge delegations of small EU-countries where dozens try to sit at the table, it shows the difference: when you want to get things done, never more than 8 at a table.
It is all about classical bilateral diplomacy. They will now set up the agenda. That is the essential part prior to any summit. Which topics will be on the list and which items will not be there.
Meanwhile, the EU-minichiefs are displaying their ususal martial cacophony and strategic myopia. They have not yet realised that they are irrelevant.

#107: Staatsversagen

Good evening from Planet Russia
Little Charlie had his first ride in a sleigh, and for me it was the second time in my life.
Some 30 years ago we had such romantic rides in Hungary.
Very grateful for such a Sunday in Kasimov, truly the place to be
Thank you Dasha, Daniil and Sergey for the videos!
Bravo to beautiful Princessa who drew the sleigh
