Very interesting new neuroscience paper, on brain regions associated with political allegiance. Vietnam vets with damage to the prefrontal cortex showed an increased intensity in their political affiliation (regardless of the side of the political spectrum they were on).
Recent research on hormonal contraception showed that it actually shrinks a key part of the prefrontal cortex called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Could it be, then, that widespread use of the contraceptive pill--by altering the prefrontal cortex--is driving the well-known drift of young women further and further to the left? This is pretty interesting. Triathletes who took a dump before doing a series of cognitive tests performed significantly better than those who didn't. Constipation had already been linked to impaired cognitive function in dementia patients, but now this new study shows it applies to fit, healthy people too.

Further proof you get nothing for free. A new study of the sweetener sucralose shows that it actually stimulates rather than satisfying hunger. It provides the sensation of sweetness without the caloric payoff, and this sends the brain's appetite centres wild.
