Assipattle and the Mester Storworm

In early January, with only a couple weeks till my husbands birthday, I ambitiously decided to create something for him.
I fell in love with the artwork in this book and knew doing a carving based on a Scottish myth was the way to go for my husband, considering his heritage.

Unfortunately his birthday was a week ago and I’ve only just finished the piece (with a couple more coats of linseed to go) but better late than never right?

“In times past, the Danes were Christians, but nevertheless continued to worship idols in their traditional manner. The Danes affirmed that Christ was a god. But they claimed that there were other, greater gods, who manifested themselves to people through even more powerful signs and prodigies.”
~Widukind of Corvey, Deeds of the Saxons
Many common folk did the bare minimum to keep their kings and their allies satisfied, and continued to worship the Gods long after their official conversion.

Carving of Heathen Carvings set on the table.
From a Good friend of mine;

"After being too scared to try use a chisel since I was a kid, I finally picked up the tools my dad gave me to attempt a relief carving.
I instantly regretted not doing it sooner.
Carved on pine.
Inspired by photos taken by @wessexwoodcraft on his recent visit to Sagnlandet Lejre in Denmark.
This design along with others inspired by helmet plates are carved into the honoured guests bench in the Kings Hall.

Solstice blessings to you all!
We'll be back very soon with more great carvings to share with you but for now enjoy your Yule!
Beautifully carved wéohas from the Ealdríce Théod
Happiness for me is spending a morning splitting logs with my sons with hatchets I made for them...... Also got some nice cherry to carve for later.
Here's a little something I'm working on. Eyes look very daunting to do but they're actually fairly straightforward. I did this one with a detail knife.
I'll post a step by step guide very soon....

Natural tidbit for the woodsmen.

The next few days leading up to this Winter Solstice New Moon
Are the ideal time for harvesting wood.  Its known as "Moonwood".
Because the energies are drawn into the Earth, and tree sap and moisture;  logs will weigh significantly less, and dry quicker.

In studies, the grain itself is actually tighter, because the moisture isnt taking up any room.  You will end up with more dense boards from any milling.

Even if you're just harvesting firewood, the New Moon is the time, and this is the best one.
I learned this first from old-time Oregon loggers, and there are Germans who have studied this folk knowledge quite a bit, in the modern day.

I've always loved the idea of carving works into random places in public. It's the thought of someone stumbling across it to brighten their day.
Also adding intrigue and enchantment to our disenchanted world is important work in of itself.

This piece was done by Alex who has allowed me to showcase some of his other work on this channel. More of his work can be found here https://www.instagram.com/_____alexandru?igsh=bTI3eTdxajZ4amlu
It finally happened.

R.I.P 😔
