Ukraine will receive 60 IRIS-T missiles from Germany in the short term. This was announced two days ago by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence after the Ukraine visit by Germany's Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius.

I had previously assumed that these would be delivered (mainly) via the industry, as it had only been announced a few days earlier that Germany would supply Ukraine with nearly 50 (48?) IRIS-T missiles via the industry (originally produced for the Bundeswehr) in the short term. That's why I didn't tweet about it.

However, the German Press Agency is now reporting that the 60 IRIS-T missiles are to come from Bundeswehr stocks, which leaves the question: will Ukraine receive almost 110 IRIS-T missiles at short notice from Germany which means these are two separate pledges, or will the almost 50 previously pledged missiles be delivered to the Bundeswehr as originally planned?

It sounds to me as if these are two separate commitments, so that Ukraine should now actually be receiving approximately 110 IRIS-T missiles from Germany. However, I will keep you up to date if there is any news on this.
UPDATE 04/25 — Since we have almost reached the end of the month, I already wanted to provide you with the usual monthly infographic on German shell deliveries. After a weak past month, deliveries to Ukraine have picked up again with 1,000 122mm shells and 27,000 155mm shells.
Eutelsat’s chief executive Eva Berneke told Reuters that Eutelsat has provided Ukraine with its high-speed satellite internet for about a year, while the German government has borne the entire cost. This is a previously undisclosed assistance from the German government!

According to Berneke, less than 1,000 terminals are connecting users in Ukraine to Eutelsat’s network, while they are currently working on getting up to between 5,000 and 10,000 terminals and are in negotiations with the German government about financing the increase.

A few updates on Rheinmetall’s involvement in Ukraine based on an interview of Rheinmetall CEO Papperger with DW 👇

→ Confirmation that the construction of the planned factory for the production of air defence systems in Ukraine has not yet started, as there are still no orders to date.

→ In the case of the Lynx IFV, decisions still have to be made as to where the IFVs will be deployed. In addition, there is still no funding, so there is still no production there either.

→ Production of 155mm shells by the newly constructed plant in Unterlüß (Germany) starts in April 2025. Deliveries to Ukraine will follow afterwards.

→ Logistical routes are currently being established for the already opened maintenance hub in Ukraine to ensure that sufficient spare parts find their way to the hub. After that, the repair/maintenance of not only Marder 1A3 IFVs which currently already takes place, but also Leopard 1 & 2 MBTs and PzH 2000 SPGs will be carried out locally in Ukraine. This should be the case in a few months, according to Papperger.

→ Even in the event of an unforeseen end to the war, Rheinmetall still plans to establish both the factory for the production of armoured vehicles and the factory for the production of air defence systems in Ukraine.

In a recently published video, the Air Command West showed an interception of a target by a German-delivered Gepard SPAAG during a Russian attack at night.

The look from the inside provides us with interesting data (distance, altitude, and velocity of the target), while we also see the interception itself by a single burst thanks to what it looks like CCTV recordings.

In total, Germany has delivered 52 Gepard SPAAGs and 3 Cheetah SPAAGs to Ukraine and plans to deliver another 12 Cheetah SPAAGs in the future, most of them until the end of this year.

My latest piece → After the supply of loitering munition played virtually no role in Germany's assistance to Ukraine during the first three years of the war, it is now picking up speed as well over 1,000 drones have been delivered to the AFU.

My latest piece → A current example shows that Germany and the EU have to reallocate €100 million in funding at short notice to finance urgently needed repairs of damaged substations in Ukraine, as USAID funding for this project has been cancelled.

In return for the delivery of 3 Leopard 2A6 MBTs from Portuguese army stocks to Ukraine, the German MoD and the Portuguese MoD agreed that Germany will finance the maintenance of the remaining active Leopard 2A6 fleet (€20 million). A LoI was signed in November 2023. I already reported about this in 2023.

What is new, however, is that after more than a year, in January 2025, the Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Army has proposed a draft contract, which has now been given formal approval by the Portuguese government. This contract must now be signed by KNDS Deutschland and the Portuguese army.

The maintenance work on the 14 Leopard 2A6 in service with the Portuguese army should then begin this year. The first payment of €10 million, which should have been paid by the German government in 2024 has therefore very likely not yet been made.

I made a small update to the planned military aid on my website. Due to various recent statements about the number of 155mm shells delivered via the Czech ammunition initiative, I have now marked Germany's deliveries (180,000 155mm shells) as fully delivered.

I have thus reassigned the 130,000 155mm shells that had not yet been officially confirmed to be delivered and were therefore still marked as planned deliveries via the initiative on my website to the 155mm shell deliveries outside the Czech ammunition initiative.

Of course, this has not changed the total amount to be delivered. It is still 213,000 155mm shells.

Update — According to German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius, the 30 Patriot missiles come from Bundeswehr stocks and have already been delivered!

Germany has also founded another capability coalition (Electromagnetic Combat) to support Ukraine, and 10 partner countries have currently joined.
During a surprise visit to Ukraine today, Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock pledged another €130 million in humanitarian aid and stabilization funds to Ukraine.

In a press statement, she said, among other things, that Putin is only simulating a willingness to negotiate and that we must not allow ourselves to be blinded by him. This is also why it is so important to be in Ukraine now and to make it clear that the next German government will continue to provide massive support for Ukraine.

It's already well known that Rheinmetall is planning to manufacture Lynx IFVs in Ukraine. To date, I have repeatedly pointed out that AFAIK the project has no secured funding. SPIEGEL now writes that Rheinmetall plans to start the production in Ukraine in 2027.

Still, no information on whether there is a signed contract with secured funding, or whether 2027 is simply a possible timeline.

Germany's likely next chancellor Friedrich Merz in dialogue with the US Vice-President JD Vance on the future of Ukraine on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference 👇

👉 Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine must come to an end as soon as possible
👉 The US and Europe must coordinate together to archive a lasting peace for Ukraine
👉 Merz proposed that, as a confidence-building measure, a ceasefire in Ukraine should be agreed upon before the start of negotiations with Russia
