The subject is based on the poem "Seasons" by the English poet James Thomson (1700-1748), or rather on one of its parts, "Summer". It tells the tragic story of two lovers, Celadon and Amelia. Celadon and Amelia are out for a walk. Suddenly a storm breaks out, frightening the girl, and Celadon tries to protect her. But a lightning strike strikes Amelia and she dies in his arms.
