William Lilly describes the North Node as being of the nature of Jupiter and the South Node as being of the nature of Saturn, insofar as one signifies increase or magnification and the other decrease or reduction. You can see a common underlying theme here.

An acquaintance more familiar with Vedic astrology and spirituality told me that the North and South Nodes show attachment (north) and detachment (south). This is in no way a complete picture of the nodes but I believe it is something accurate and very good to keep in mind.
