Japan's "Superconducting Linear" has garnered global attention for its overwhelming speed. Since starting its operation in Yamanashi in 1997, it has undergone over 3.1 million miles of running tests. (5 million kilometers)
The technological development has been completed, and efforts are currently underway to reduce costs and refine the technology for commercial operations. This linear train controls vehicle levitation and propulsion entirely through magnetic forces, operating autonomously from the ground.
Japan is prone to earthquakes, but the superconducting linear lifts without using external power, ensuring it will not suddenly drop to the ground in the event of a quake. This feature guarantees a high level of safety.
Currently, China's "Shanghai Maglev" uses permanent electric magnets for levitation of about 1 cm, raising concerns about potential contact and obstacles during earthquakes. In contrast, the superconducting linear achieves a 10 cm elevation using superconducting magnets, making it less susceptible to earthquake effects, thus enabling faster travel with enhanced safety.
Japan's railway technology is being adopted in various countries, including India, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. Notably, in the United States, linear technology is a strong candidate for implementation.
There are plans to cut the travel time between New York and Washington, which currently takes just under three hours by high-speed rail, to approximately one hour with the superconducting linear. This development is expected to efficiently connect the densely populated northeastern region.
