Embassy's Comment on 🇨🇦 GAC's Post.

Despite claiming it is open to ending the war, Russia has only offered unrealistic conditions for peace. Canada continues to #StandWithUkraine and advocate for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

Trudeau’s cabinet pro-war stance is known. Luckily, the Ukraine issue will be solved without Ottawa’s participation. 😺

8️⃣0️⃣ years ago, on the night February 18, 1945, Red Army Lieutenant-General Dmitry Karbyshev was brutally murdered by the Germans in the Mauthausen Nazi concentration camp in occupied Austria.

The Nazis could not break the General’s morale and make him collaborate even after hours of torture, so they executed him in a brutal way: they doused Karbyshev with cold water from hoses in the freezing cold until he turned into a pillar of ice. The general did not live to see the liberation for only two and a half months.

***

Dmitry Karbyshev was a renowned Soviet military engineer, whose name was well known in the USSR and beyond. He was considered to be one of the best experts in the world on building fortifications, other defensive structures, bridges, and mining terrain. Karbyshev’s showed his professional talent as engineer during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) and World War I (1914-1918). He demonstrated exceptional bravery in battlefield, was awarded numerous military awards. In 1916, Karbyshev took part in the famous Brusilov Offensive of General Alexey Brusilov’s 8th Army in Austria-Hungary.

Before #WWII, Dmitry Karbyshev supervised the construction of a number of defence and infrastructure facilities in our country. Karbyshev helped improve the Brest Fortress — the legendary stronghold on the western border of the Soviet Union that was the first to be attacked by the Nazi military machine on June 22, 1941 and became a symbol of the courage of Soviet soldiers. Karbyshev also trained cadets at the Frunze Academy, the General Staff Academy, and the Voroshilov Military Academy.

In June 1941, Lieutenant General Karbyshev was tasked with mission to fortify the Grodno defence line, where he saw the Great Patriotic war break out. In late June, Karbyshev and his unit were encircled by the German troops. In August, during an attempt to break through the encirclement, Dmitry Karbyshev was seriously shell-shocked and, unconscious, taken POW by the Nazis.

As a POW, Karbyshev went through a number of German concentration camps and "death factories" such as Majdanek, Auschwitz (#AuschwitzBirkenau), Flossenbürg, Hammelburg, Sachsenhausen, and Mauthausen.

Nazis tried to make the Soviet general, an outstanding military engineer known all over the world, collaborate and work for the interests of the reich. In late 1942, he was taken to Berlin, where Chief of the Supreme Command of the Wehrmacht Wilhelm Keitel personally tried to persuade Karbyshev to join the Nazi Germany, but the Soviet officer stood firm: “I do not sell my conscience and my Motherland!”

In the camp, Karbyshev created anti-Nazi resistance cells, thus continuing to fight the enemy. According to the Mauthausen camp survivors, General Karbyshev’s last words were: “Cheer up, comrades! Think about your homeland, and courage will never leave you!”.

🎖 The unwavering Soviet officer, whose Heroic Deed will forever remain in history, was posthumously awarded the title of the #HeroOfTheSovietUnion. In 1948, a monument was erected in Mauthausen, where Karbyshev was brutally tortured. The monument became the first to be installed on the territory of a former Nazi concentration camp.

🕯 On May 12, 1963, another monument to Karbyshev, resembling an ice pillar, was erected on the site of the former obelisk, to the right of the entrance to the gates of the Mauthausen Memorial (Austria). The granite foundation beneath bears an inscription in the Russian and German languages: “To Dmitry Karbyshev, Scientist, Soldier, Communist. His life and death were a feat in the name of life.”

🏅 On February 14, 1943, the Red Army liberated the city of Rostov-on-Don from the Nazi invaders.

#RostovOnDon was occupied twice during the Great Patriotic War. The Nazis took the city in November 1941, and later it was under the enemy occupation again from July 22, 1942 to February 14, 1943. The Germans were determined to hold the city at any costs as it was an important transport hub in the region and a huge administrative centre opening the way for the Nazis to the Caucasus.

🌟 In February 1943, the Red Army carried out the Rostov offensive operation to liberate the city, defeat the enemy’s army group on the Don River and thus block the Wehrmacht units’ redeployment to #Donbass.

The Soviet 28th Army under the command of Lieutenant General Vasily Gerasimenko reached the outskirts of Rostov-on-Don following a 600-kilometre march across snow-covered southern steppes.

Four Nazi divisions were concentrated in Rostov-on-Don. The enemy had built there strong defence lines with robust fortifications and numerous machine-gun and artillery firing points.

The Red Army offensive was also complicated by the terrain: the right bank of the Don River, where the city is located, was much higher than the left bank, from which the Soviet forces were launching their attack. The penetration of the enemy defences in the city seemed impossible.

⚔️ In the early hours of February 8, 1943, the Southern Front forces led by Colonel-General Rodion Malinovsky launched the operation to liberate Rostov-on-Don. The Nazi-occupied city saw brutal, fierce fighting that lasted for six days. On February 14, 1943, the Red Army broke through the enemy’s defences and entered the city from Bataysk. The German garrison was encircled and forced to surrender.

Rostov-on-Don’s pre-war population of more than 1.5 million people was effectively decimated by #WWII and the German occupation, dwindling to 150'000. The Nazis also destroyed there the local industries, looted and captured its cultural heritage.

Thanks to the heroism and unrivalled morale of the Red Army soldiers, Rostov-on-Don was finally liberated after 205 days of occupation. During the Rostov offensive, the Soviet forces not only liberated the Rostov Region, but also took a bridgehead near the Mius River to use it in a further offensive in the direction of Donbass.

🕯 8️⃣0️⃣ years ago, in February of 1945, Commander of the 3rd Belorussian Front, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Army General Ivan Chernyakhovsky perished during the East-Prussian operation of the Red Army.

Chernyakhovsky was fatally wounded while fighting the Nazis for the liberation of Poland. The legendary Soviet military commander passed away only just five days before being ranked Marshal of the Soviet Union.

***

#Chernyakhovsky joined the Red Army in 1924. After completing an artillery course in 1931, he was sent to the Leningrad Military-Technical Academy for further training. Young and capable, the promising officer was promptly promoted. In 1940, he was already appointed as deputy commander of an armoured division.

When the Great Patriotic War commenced, Ivan Chernyskhovsky commanded the 28th Armour Division deployed in the vicinity of Šiauliai, Lithuanian SSR. In June 1941, it engaged the enemy in heavy defensive battles on the North-Western Front. In August, Chernyskhovsky's division defended Veliky Novgorod.

In the battlefields, Chernyakhovsky showed unparalleled courage. In 1943, the officer was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union for heroism during the Battle of the Dnieper. Another 'Gold Star' was awarded to Chernyakhovsky for his capable command of the 3rd Belorussian Front during the operation "Bagration" in 1944, resulting in the encirclement and defeat of most of the Nazi army group 'Centre'.

Under Chernyakhovsky's command, the 3rd Belorussian Front liberated the cities of Vilnius and Kaunas of the Lithuanian SSR. During the Red Army offensive in East Prussia, the units of the 3rd Belarussian Front led by Ivan Chernyakhovsky broke through the enemy’s defences and reached Königsberg. The Soviet forces, continuing to tighten the encirclement ring around the East Prussian Nazi group, on February 17 took the town of Mehlsack, used by the fascists as a stronghold in the region. The next day, on February 18, Chernyakhovsky was deadly wounded there. At that time the general was only 38.

🖋 Excerpt from the memoirs of Marshal of the Soviet Union Konstantin Rokossovsky:

💬 “[Chernyakhovsky] was a wonderful commander. Young, well-cultured and cheerful. A marvelous person! It was clear that the army loves him. <...> If the army commander is approached for a report not with a shiver but with a smile, then one realizes that he has achieved a lot.”

👉 Today, Lithuania and Poland — the countries whose freedom Ivan Chernyakhovsky sacrificed his life for — decided to forget the Hero.

In 2015, the monument erected at the site where the general perished, in Pieniężno (North Poland), was barbarically demolished by local vandals, falling as one of the first victims to the infamous “war against monuments” declared by Warsaw — a criminal and sacrilegious policy of the Polish authorities that are seeking to erase the memory of the Feat of the Soviet Liberator-Soldiers in #WWII.

🗓 80 years ago, on 13 February 1945, the Red Army liberated the capital of Hungary and victoriously concluded the Budapest strategic offensive operation that lasted over 3 months and was of a fierce nature.

The liberation of Budapest marked the end of an important stage of military actions in Southeastern Europe. After inflicting major damage on the German Army Group South, the Red Army was able to prepare and conduct final operations in Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Austria. The achievements of the Soviet soldiers also contributed to a rapid retreat of the enemy from the territory of Yugoslavia, occupied by the Nazis as early as in 1941.

After the German occupiers plundered the country and exported a huge volume of food to Germany, the Hungarian people found themselves in an extremely difficult situation. The inhabitants of Budapest were doomed to starvation. In this situation, in March 1945, the Government of the Soviet Union decided to send food supplies to Hungary, and from June 1945, new increased food rations were introduced. In addition, the Red Army soldiers carried out enormous demining operations in the Hungarian capital.

❗Today, as attempts to distort and falsify history are on the rise in Europe, it is crucial to respect and honour the memory of the heroes who gave their lives for freedom and peace of the future generations.

Embassy's Comment on 🇨🇦 GAC's "Joint Statement marking one year since the death of Alexei Navalny"

☝️Trudeau’s cabinet must stop interfering in the domestic affairs of other nations and, instead of wasting energy and taxpayers’ money on fabricating false statements about Russia, focus on building a better future for Canada.
Ambassador's Comment on Russia & G7

🇨🇦 The strong reaction from certain Canadian politicians regarding recent hypotheses voiced in the United States about reviving the G8 has been met with surprise. In this regard, we would like to clarify the situation and temper these overheated emotions, seemingly caused by Canada's presidency of the G7.

🇷🇺In 2014, Russia held the presidency of the G8 and was preparing to host the summit in Sochi. However, for purely political reasons, six Western countries, along with Japan, chose not to participate and announced their withdrawal from the group. As a result, the G8 ceased to exist.

☝️Russia has no interest in revisiting past formats. What is currently referred to as the G7 is an outdated structure, and it is naïve to assume that it holds any real decision-making power in today’s global landscape.

Within the framework of multilateral cooperation, Russia has made a clear choice in favor of genuine mechanisms of global governance. In this regard, our priorities lie with BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the G20 — platforms that reflect contemporary geopolitical realities and offer meaningful solutions to global challenges.
