How Hitler Dismantled a Democracy in 53 Days

He used the constitution to shatter the constitution.

Ninety-two years ago this month, on Monday morning, January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed the 15th chancellor of the Weimar Republic. In one of the most astonishing political transformations in the history of democracy, Hitler set about destroying a constitutional republic through constitutional means. What follows is a step-by-step account of how Hitler systematically disabled and then dismantled his country’s democratic structures and processes in less than two months’ time—specifically, one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours, and 40 minutes. The minutes, as we will see, mattered.

Joseph Goebbels, who was present that day as a National Socialist Reichstag delegate, would later marvel that the National Socialists had succeeded in dismantling a federated constitutional republic entirely through constitutional means. Seven years earlier, in 1926, after being elected to the Reichstag as one the first 12 National Socialist delegates, Goebbels had been similarly struck: He was surprised to discover that he and these 11 other men (including Hermann Göring and Hans Frank), seated in a single row on the periphery of a plenary hall in their brown uniforms with swastika armbands, had—even as self-declared enemies of the Weimar Republic—been accorded free first-class train travel and subsidized meals, along with the capacity to disrupt, obstruct, and paralyze democratic structures and processes at will. “The big joke on democracy,” he observed, “is that it gives its mortal enemies the means to its own destruction.”

1865: The great classical composer Jean Sibelius is born in in Hämeenlinna, Finland, then a part of the Russian Empire. A choral adaptation of his inspiring Finlandia has been used since 1991 as theme music for the National Alliance radio program American Dissident Voices. On his 70th birthday (8 December 1935), he was awarded the Goethe Medal with a certificate signed by Adolf Hitler. During World War 2, Sibelius strongly urged Finns to ally with and fight alongside German forces — and said to the Germans, “I wish with all my heart that you may enjoy a speedy victory.”

Why the System Fears Artists

You receive the most fire when you are over the target, the system unveils its fears and lays bare its worries with sentences and punitive measures designed to deter others from following suit. A message is being sent by the system but it is our message of hope. In a world so devoid of anything loosely resembling beauty a single act of wonder can inspire a man of action.

Our culture is one that comes from adversity, when we can climb the struggle ladder and produce an excess of food we create a community that is intertwined and thriving. We have an excess, a bounty, a surplus. From this creates an avenue where we can enjoy our time, theories, conversations and past times together. To fill this vacuum enters the artist, the asymmetric thinker. They produce artisan creations, gadgets to enhance our lives and give us more free time, they make music for us to recreate as we work, they give us paintings and images that inspire our days and invoke feelings and concepts we would not have made on our own. When art is around, we have all we need and historically speaking we have a culture that is defined and defended. We identify with a people, a place, a culture and most importantly a purpose.

We begin to understand our place in the world is not to struggle day to day for the same task as those around us, we have purpose, potentially a divine one at that. We understand what sacrifice is, having worked our hands raw just for subsistence we have that understanding and ethos within. Seeing artists do the same just to give us relief from our daily grind, seeing them dedicate their days and work their hands raw as is their purpose and nature, solely for our benefit.

What we are witnessing is this process inside an organic rising of a people, one who has toiled for decades to build in silence, working its hands raw, having lost many on the path to where we are now. They have laid a solid foundation, an ethos, a culture, a vision and created a vacuum and conditions where the artist may rise. As we witness the rise of the artist we hear others hum their tunes whilst working, we speak with others so moved at an image they feel an urge to connect with ideas and others around them. Finally our White brethren see each other as brothers, as a community as a people. The artist has inspired, now the system has focused its attention on them out of fear. They are trying to drive our artists away and into the corners, but in the eternal words of Mr Bond, "legends are made when you corner White men."
