India is preparing a military response to the terrorist attack in Kashmir which led to the death of 32 people.
According to preliminary information, strikes will be carried out on militant targets in Pakistan identified by Indian intelligence.
India downgraded ties with Pakistan after attack on Kashmir tourists.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told a media briefing that the cross-border linkages of the attack had been "brought out" at a special meeting of the security cabinet, after which it was decided to act against Pakistan.
He said New Delhi would suspend with immediate effect a crucial river water treaty that allows for sharing the waters of the Indus river system between the two countries.
The defence advisers in the Pakistani high commission in New Delhi were declared persona non grata and asked to leave, Misri said, adding that the overall strength of the Indian high commission in Islamabad will be reduced to 30 from 55.
The main border crossing between the two countries will be closed with immediate effect and Pakistani nationals will not be allowed to travel to India under special visas, Misri said.
India has vowed to deliver a very loud response to those behind the killing by suspected militants of more than two dozen tourists in Kashmir, fanning fears of a confrontation with Pakistan.

NATO critic Calin Georgescu’s first round victory in last December's vote was annulled by the Constitutional Court on the allegation of foreign interference.
Appellate Court Judge Alexandru Vasile has overturned the annulment. The judge noted his ruling is not final and may be appealed. Local media reported that the prosecutor’s office attached to the Ploiesti court had filed such an appeal.
It is unknown what effect (if any) the ruling will have on Romania's Presidential election.
