Fragments for a Gilded Age

He steps from the gleaming chassis,
hair lacquered,
words burnished.
Says: I know your toil.
Says: I bear your yoke.
But his voice is oil —
slick,
never sticking to the stone.
His fingers do not crack in winter.
His sleep is not broken
by the rent come due.
We hammer in cold dawn,
he feasts beneath chandeliers.
Still —
the crowd chants his name
like a charm
to ward off hunger.
Do they not see?
The coin spins always
toward the same hands.
The altar is set,
not for saints,
but for shareholders.
And every promise —
an incantation
to keep us quiet.
The silos groan with wheat.
The lakes are thick with fish.
And yet—
the child grows thin,
the cupboards echo.
Not from lack.
From design.
They’ve gilded the cage
and taught us to sing in it.
He is not with us.
He is not of us.
He is the mask
on the face of the leech.
And you —
still closer to the dust
than you will ever be
to the throne.

Neither political party recognizes us as a people, let alone one having any kind of ethnic interest or claim to this land.
If this is not our government and we are essentially a stateless people then the question is who's government is it? (I know, rhetorical...)

White Army propaganda poster from the Russian Civil War era (1919), depicting a caricature Leon Trotsky as a large demon, and Chinese soldiers.
There was a notable number of them in the Red Army. They are depicted executing a prisoner and shoveling bones. Many Chinese were used as executioners in the Cheka and had a reputation as such among White Army soldiers.
