Trump's policies make the US a "scary place to invest" and create the risk of stagflation.
Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs have made the US a "scary place to invest" and could trigger stagflation, said Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz.
Stiglitz told the Guardian.
He argued that despite optimism about the state of the U.S. economy at the turn of the year, uncertainty caused by Trump's tariff plans and the president's apparent disregard for the rule of law would deter investment.

He singled out Elon Musk's attempts to cut government departments without Congressional approval, as well as Trump's disregard for contracts, including the trade pact he signed with Canada and Mexico in his first term, among negative signals for investors considering the United States as a destination for growth.

Stiglitz, a Columbia University professor and former World Bank economist who served as chairman of Bill Clinton's Council of economic Advisers, said the Fed is "clearly concerned" about the inflationary consequences of Trump's policies, which could lead to higher interest rates.
Almost all economists agree that tariffs will lead to higher prices. How much they increase prices depends slightly on the magnitude of the exchange rate increase, but all economists believe that the degree of exchange rate increase will be far from sufficient to offset the tariffs.
