قال الإمام الشافعي رحمه الله:
من وعظ أخاه سراً فقد نصحه وزانه، ومن وعظه علانية فقد فضحه وشانه. إن النصح في السر حب وشفقة والنصح في العلن انتفاص وفضيحة.
تعمدني بنصحك في انفـرادي
وجنبني النصيحة في الجماعة
فإن النصح بين الناس نـوع
من التوبيخ لا أرضى استماعه
وإن خالفتني وعصيت قولـي
فلا تجزع إذا لم تعط طاعـة

Imam Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
"Whoever advises his brother in secret has given him sincere advice and honored him, while whoever advises him publicly has exposed and shamed him. Indeed, private advice is an expression of love and compassion, while advice in public is humiliation and disgrace.
Poetry:
'Give me your advice in private,
And spare me the advice in public,
For advice among people is a kind
Of reproach that I do not like to hear.
And if you oppose me and disobey my words,
Do not be dismayed if you do not receive obedience.'"
