🟦🎙⚡️ Former director of the Romanian Information Service and grey eminence in PNL, Eduard Hellvig, wrote on X (Twitter):

⬜️❌🇺🇸 USR president, Elena Lasconi condemns Trump for his statement about Moldova and the cessation of American aid to the country.

She reiterates that Romania and the EU should grant even more money to Chișinău to “secure Moldova’s European future”.

She promises to unconditionally support Moldova if elected president. She promises to invest money in education, energy and infrastructure in Moldova. She rejects claims that Romania’s aid to Moldova is a form of “alms”

🇷🇴🗳⚡️— 🇩🇪📰 Tichys Einblick | Does Romania want to protect democracy from its own people?

“Last Saturday Georgescu stood before tens of thousands of voters and told them: “we will take our country back”. He is running for president again and since November a lot has changed; He isn’t polled with 23% anymore but with 37-38%. Although polls have their problems his popularity is undeniable. In addition, polls show very few undecided voters and a large desire to vote. There’s only one consolation: Georgescu has a smaller chance to win more votes in the 2nd round than his rivals in the traditional parties.

His popularity growing after the previous failed elections means that the reasoning given by the CCR is flawed. They mentioned Russian collusion with an illegal campaign on TikTok but that TikTok campaign mentioned by the intel agency was proven to have been paid for by the ruling National Liberal Party (PNL)

In any case, what worked then will not work now as new rules make it harder for someone to emulate what Georgescu did. Yet, this might not be needed as Georgescu is even more popular. His secret to succes must lay elsewhere. He collected 200k signatures for president in a very short amount of time.

The cops didn’t took long to show up. They accused him of 6 different crimes. He was arrested by a big group of cops and with media crews around him and they dragged him for questioning even though he would have not tried to run away and would have come for questioning willingly.

His charges look like they have been made for someone the likes of Hitler and Mussolini besides the charge of being a puppet of the Russians. It is said that he founded an antisemitic organisation, that he glorified war criminals and genocides and had fascist, racist or xenophobic opinions. He allegedly falsified documents related to his electoral campaign and spread fake news. Most importantly, it is alleged he committed acts meant to overthrow the constitution. All of this means many years in prison and/or being disqualified from running for president, the latter being the real purpose behind these charges.

Let’s remember that the Electoral Bureau validated Georgescu when he first submitted his candidacy, a 2nd time after the 1st round, the latter being confirmed by the CCR. Perhaps coincidentally we recently found out about Toni Greblă’s corruption allegations right when they were charging Georgescu and the Parliament revoked Greblă’s mandate the same week the allegations were made public (…)

Could this all be a ploy to make Georgescu a martyr and have him win? A Hungarian political scientist, Zsolt Pászkán asks if the incredibly incompetent approach of the Romanian authorities regarding the elections has this specific purpose.

President of the Covasna County Council, Sándor Tamás believes there is a power struggle between all six intel agencies. It is known that Georgescu has a past with the pro-Russian side of the intel agencies.

The pro-Russian side was marginalised by Ceaușescu in the 1970s and as a revenge, with the support of Gorbachev they overthrew him in 1989. They installed Ion Iliescu and initiated a series of reforms but they became more and more irrelevant as Romania took a pro-Western path.

Sándor Tamás believes this group of intel officers are plotting revenge. Georgescu has laid claim to Ukrainian land. The question is who is ruling Romania right now? According to Tamás it certainly isn’t the government. He likens Romania to Italy in the 1970s and 1980s when the mafia was at its peak.

To conclude, Tamás believes that in Romania there is a power struggle between intel agencies and a power struggle between the great powers, Russia, the EU, the US. A recent turn of events threw everything off the rails, last December the US intervened discretely to have the elections cancelled, but now that Trump is in power, his ally, Musk, is rooting for Georgescu. This makes sense only if Trump wants to weaken the EU more than he wants to weaken Russia”.

🇷🇴🤝🇲🇩 Yesterday, on March 1st, interim-president of Romania, Ilie Bolojan, went to Chișinău and met with his Moldovan counterpart, Maia Sandu.

There, Bolojan reiterated old promises from the Johannis presidency of supporting EU integration and consolidating the security of Moldova. Nothing else noteworthy to mention, just repeating stuff we've heard for the last 3 years, from every Romanian and Moldovan official.

🇷🇴🇪🇺❌🌐 A deeper look at the new "misinformation bill" based on the EU DSA, prepared by lawmakers set to take effect on March 25th:

🔶 Vague Definitions (Art. 3, 4): Broad, unclear terms like "illegal content" (e.g., "hate speech," "manipulation") and "inauthentic behavior" lack precise criteria, risking arbitrary enforcement.

🔶 Procedural Gaps (Art. 5-7, 10): Immediate content blocking in "urgent" cases (undefined) and vague inter-agency roles lack safeguards or clear processes, enabling abuse.

🔶 Rights Violations: Freedom of Expression (Art. 30): Content removal without judicial oversight (Art. 6, 10) violates anti-censorship rules.

🔶 Right to Information (Art. 31): Blocking access (Art. 10) limits public info without transparency.

🔶 Fair Trial (Art. 21): Non-suspendable decisions (Art. 9(2)) and tight contestation deadlines restrict recourse.

🔶 Disproportionate Measures: Harsh penalties for social media platforms and providers (Art. 14, 50,000-100,000 RON/day) and domain blocking (Art. 10) exceed necessity, lacking evidence of milder alternatives’ inadequacy.

🔶 Censorship Risks: ANCOM’s extensive powers (Art. 5, 6, 10), short compliance deadlines (Art. 13), and no public oversight (Art. 16) could centralize control and suppress dissent.

Meanwhile, the party pretending to be in opposition to the current government, USR, initiated today an even more harrowing bill on online censorship:

USR MP, Radu Miruţă, initiator, says "it is time for Romania to be an example of good practices in terms of eliminating illegal content and limiting the propagation of false content on social networks, given the cancellation of the December presidential elections."

🇺🇸❌🇲🇩 US president, Donald Trump, mentioned Moldova in his state of the nation address!

He yet again decried the Joe Biden’s Administration’s waste of public funds, talking about USAID’s external aid programs and Trump gave a bunch of examples, among which was Moldova.

The aid he mentioned was a certain 32 million USD grant for the promotion of liberal-progressivist values in the country.

🌹❌🟦 The story does not end there: informed sources report that the some within the National Liberal Party don't trust their social-democrat allies and are pushing to drop Crin Antonescu in favor of Ilie Bolojan and let PSD embrace Victor Ponta.

Sources say that some in PNL believe their allies in PSD are not putting their full backs behind Antonescu and view this as part of a ploy. The latest event which supported this theory was PSD's refusal to kick Victor Ponta out after he started collecting signatures for president.

However, the camp that believes the time to break up the alliance with PSD is a minority voice inside PNL as, officially at least, interim-president of PNL, Cătălin Predoiu, ordered that all PNL branches start aggressively promoting Crin Antonescu on the streets.

Time will tell if the coalition will drop support for Antonescu and pick someone else.

🇲🇩❌🇲🇩🇷🇺🇷🇺 On the 2nd of March 1992, 32 years ago, Moldovan president, Mircea Snegur, authorised a military intervention to recapture the land across the Dneister seized by pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian separatists in what would become known as the Transnistrian War.

Although the initial spats of violence began as early as November 1990 in the region of Dubăsari/Dubbosary, the conflict stood frozen for over one and a half years until Moldova became recognised as UN member state. During this time, between November 1990 and March 1992, Chișinău as well as Tiraspol, scrambled to organise their armed forces in preparation for the future showdown.

Yet the time was not enough for Moldova as their army was more comparable to a militia and as such failed to retake control over the city of Dubăsari which was one of the few bastions of pro-Romanian feelings on the left bank of the Dneister. In the meantime, the separatist militia with aid from Russia who ceded most of the equipment and vehicles of the 14th Army to Tiraspol as well as Don, Kuban, Orenburg and UNA-UNSO volunteers assaulted the city of Tighina on the right-bank of the Dneister renaming it as ”Bendery”.

Moldova lost 279 men meanwhile the Transnistrian side with the Russian and Ukrainian volunteers accounted to, lost upwards of 1000 men.

One notable moment from the war was during the last days of the war in June 1992 when the separatists, flying Russian flags, assaulted with tanks and IFVs the city of Tighina. The then Russian president, Boris Yeltsin, was sending ultimatum after ultimatum to Mircea Snegur telling him to withdraw or Yeltsin will be "forced" to attack... after the attack began.

Between June 19th and June 22nd 1992, the Russians bombed the city of Tighina using cruise missiles, artillery and GRAD MRLS destroying a number of apartment buildings, a kindergarten in Varnița, local factories, communication and power lines. Mind you, the city was inhabited. Half of the civilian casualties happened in Tighina.

🇷🇴❌🌐 The Romanian government answered the calls for free & fair elections by… preparing a law that would ban “fake news”, create a government factchecking system for social media and prevent users in Romania from reading “illegal posts” and “illegal election material”.

The new law says that is prepared directly as a result of the desire of the current government to “protect” its own citizens from “foreign election interference”.

The National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) will be responsible with censoring the internet according to this bill but similar attributes will be given to other institutions as well.

The new bill is being developed by a group of government experts jointly with the European Commission because, as G4Media put it, “to assure that the bill doesn’t allow the Romanian government to censor the internet and take down everything that the government doesn’t like”.

Yesterday, acting-president, Ilie Bolojan reiterated his promise to organise free & fair elections mentioning that he wanted to avoid a “repeat” of last year’s cancelled elections where misinformation was, allegedly, “rampant”.

🇷🇴🪧🇪🇺 Pro-EU NGOs are calling Romanians to protest for a "European Romania" on March 15th.

Behind the "Euromanifest" movement are the "Declic" and "Corupția Ucide" NGOs who organised pretty much all anti-government protests from 2013 to 2019, starting with ecologist anti-gold mining protests surrounding the Roșia Montană area and ending once the Dăncilă cabinet collapsed after the sentencing of Liviu Dragnea.

We shall see if they are able to bring the same number of people like they used to a decade ago.

The goals of the protests are to return to constitutional democracy, to have free & fair elections and to topple the government of Marcel Ciolacu. With Ciolacu in power we cannot have free & fair elections

I want to mention that, the way Ciolacu chose to attack the American government and the opposition in Romania. He clearly referenced the speeches of the US vice president JD Vance, who did not attack Romania.

Marcel Ciolacu does not represent Romania, we will never view him as a representative”

🌹🗳⚡️ Backstab? Victor Ponta says that if he was elected, he would ask Marcel Ciolacu to resign from his post!

Ponta said that if elected president he would want a new government formed by “professionals” but he doesn’t see a place for Marcel Ciolacu in that “professional” government.

Ponta added that he would accept ministers as long as they are professional from any political party, including the so-called “extremist” ones.

Let us recall that Marcel Ciolacu refused to kick out Victor Ponta from PSD after he announced he will be running for president, he refused to kick out Ponta even though he refused to back Crin Antonescu, something’s against the results of PSD’s general congress which are binding for all members and continued to protect him afterwards despite increasing pressure from Antonescu and Cătălin Predoiu who want Ponta out of PSD as they fear he will sabotage Crin Antonescu’s campaign.

Now Ponta basically says he will end Marcel Ciolacu’s political career if he gets elected president. Will this be the straw that broke the camel’s back?

🌐🔫🇷🇴 During the Steadfast Dart 25 exercices in Bulgaria, something interesting was caught on video.

In one of the videos, Romanian soldiers were armed with a different assault rifle than the standard issue PM md. 90s.

Looks like that rather than waiting until the Cugir arms factory starts shipping the licensed Beretta ARX-160 assault rifle, the MoD either refurbished or bought "modernised" PM md 86s and md. 90s, adding accessory rails which would permit for forward grips, laser pointers and flashlights to be added and a Picatinny rail allowing to attach a scope.

The PMs seen in the clip are not the same rifles as the Nova RAK-1 prototype because the PMs in captured in the video still have the old paratrooper-style folding buttstock, but it definitely looks like the MoD took inspiration from it or got the company to rebuild some of its assault rifles.

🇷🇴🎙⚡️ After the speech was over, acting-president, Ilie Bolojan, took questions from journalists.

On the topic of defense and peacekeepers in Ukraine:

🔶 Bolojan said he would like to see defense spending increase to 3% of the GDP but doesn’t see any reason to go further

🔶 No peacekeeping in Ukraine unless there is an international mandate for that and a parliamentary majority that supports a deployment

On criticism coming from the US and the story surrounding Călin Georgescu:

🔶 The Romanian government should be prudent and reserved in public statements surrounding sensible topics

On security guarantees to Ukraine:

🔶 Only if the EU approves such guarantees to Ukraine but says that without the US any security guarantees are “ineffective”

On a possible withdrawal of the US from Romania and lacklustre communication with America:

🔶 Evasive answer that suggests Romania is not in contact with Washington DC so he doesn’t know if the US will leave Romania or not but says that regardless what happens Romania should rely more on European partners

On the Tate Brothers story:

🔶 Bolojan reiterates that there hasn’t been any pressure from Washington to have them acquitted. He adds that the discussion claimed by the foreign minister, Emil Hurezeanu, with envoy Richard Grenell, wasn’t “very long” and that it was “misinterpreted” by the press

On Romanian-American relations:

🔶 Bolojan says to wait and pick up the official statements coming from institutions and not ordinary people

🔶 Doesn’t say if there will be a future more comprehensive dialogue between the two countries or even a phone call with the American president, only telling the journalists to wait for an official announcement (so, no)

On the cancelling of the 2024 elections:

🔶 Bolojan has asked the relevant institutions to provide supplementary evidence, basically admitting that all evidence regarding the alleged Russian collusion was already provided in the CCR’s ruling

🔶 Admits that democracy in Romania is dysfunctional and that there is little trust in authorities

Bolojan refuses to answer when asked if Călin Georgescu should be disqualified or allowed to run for president.

Lastly, he rules out running for president in May.
