🇺🇸The United States has not yet decided whether it will support the annual UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said John Kelley, the political coordinator of the U.S. Mission to the UN.
It also remains unclear whether the U.S. will co-sponsor the document — a decision expected in the coming days. In previous years, the U.S. was among the resolution’s co-sponsors.
At the UN, countries can decide to co-sponsor a resolution right up until the vote. Nations can also vote in favor of resolutions without being listed as co-sponsors. The vote is scheduled for February 24.
▪️Earlier, the Financial Times reported that the U.S. opposed labeling Russia as the aggressor in the G7 statement marking the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion.
▪️Following this, the New York Times reported that all pro-Ukrainian wording was removed from the document. As a result, a neutral draft statement now exists, which refrains from identifying Russia as the aggressor or Ukraine as the victim of the invasion.
