Rest in peace to Pope Francis. I have a nuanced opinion on Francis' papacy - I weigh both the good and the bad. The single biggest issue with Francis' reign was that while he didn't change any major Church teachings, his Papacy was a boon for 'liberal Catholicism' - Catholics who want to change or disregard core teachings that Catholicism has stood for for thousands of years. With Francis at the helm, Catholicism's enemies from both within and without felt empowered.
Francis' infamous 2013 "Who am I to judge" comment in regards to homosexuality was a devastating moment for Catholics worldwide, one that allowed the Jewish media to present traditional Catholics as out of touch with our own Church. Francis further made statements downplaying the threat of Hell, endorsing unlimited mass immigration as Catholic value when it never was such, and limited the traditional Latin Mass for no justifiable reason. He furthermore apologized for "atrocities" Catholics committed against Native American populations, rather than simply defending the strong record of Catholic missionaries and governments. Like his post-Vatican II predecessors, Francis refused to directly confront the malevolent Jewish influence on the Western world. All of this hurt Catholicism.
At the same time, Francis took the correct position on Palestine, setting an excellent example to world leaders and Catholics. He didn't mindlessly side with Ukraine against Russia as many other political and religious leaders did - he even pointed out that NATO was the true cause of the war. He firmly rejected women's ordination, abortion, and other degeneracies like pornography. As I said, he did not try to change any major Catholic teachings.
I give Francis some sympathy since he was the first Pope of the social media era. His off-hand statements were often taken out of context and implied to mean things they weren't. Still, he failed to draw a hard line on Catholic teachings and instead left many open for interpretation, creating an environment where error, sin, and stupidity could thrive. The next Pope must learn from Francis' mistakes and restore true Catholicism no matter the cost.
Future Popes must understand that tradition must be defended, and Liberalism and Jewry must be confronted with the intelligence and tact that's expected of the Papal office.
