The *bordei* was a traditional type of semi-subterranean peasant dwelling commonly found in rural regions of Romania, particularly in areas like Teleorman County. By 1906, these homes represented some of the oldest and most practical forms of rural architecture in the region, designed to offer shelter against harsh weather and provide insulation during both hot summers and cold winters. Typically, a *bordei* was dug partially into the earth, with its walls made of woven reeds or branches covered in clay, and its roof thatched with straw.
