US government records reveal Latin American leaders have spent millions hiring Washington’s top lobbyists to push for a laundry list of requests – from free-trade deals, security assistance and energy investments – to be heard by the Trump administration, according to an analysis by the Guardian and The Quincy Institute.
Since the lead-up to Donald Trump’s election as president in November 2024, Department of Justice records show that at least 10 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have registered their top officials and envoys as foreign principals under the Foreign Agent Registration Act (Fara). Fara aims to promote transparency by requiring those working as foreign agents to disclose their activities and compensation.
“Under Trump, we’ve seen a more directly transactional approach to influencing government,” said Jake Johnston, director of international policy at the Washington-based Center for Economic and Policy Research (Cepr). “The very personal relationships that have developed with the far right in Latin America have given direct access to the White House. I wouldn’t say this influence peddling is unprecedented, but the magnitude is.”

From Middle East Eye 🇬🇧 🇮🇱 On Tuesday, staff at the British Museum were reportedly told there would be a "large corporate event" that evening.
That evening, British ministers and prominent politicians were seen arriving at the country's largest museum. So was Jimmy Carr, one of Britain's most prominent television personalities.
The event, which had not been advertised, was no corporate affair. This clandestine party had been organised by the Israeli embassy to celebrate the anniversary of Israel's 77th Independence Day.
Inside the museum, the Labour ministers in attendance could listen to entertainment by the host, Carr, while rubbing shoulders with prominent opposition politicians who had been invited to the exclusive bash.
Among them was Nigel Farage - leader of Reform UK, also seen was Kemi Badenoch - leader of the Conservative party.
It was quite a statement for these British politicians to attend an event at which the keynote speech was given by Israeli ambassador Tzipi Hotovely, who once called the Nakba an "Arab lie" and is an avowed opponent of the creation of a Palestinian state.

From the Guardian 🇺🇸 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 New York University is withholding a student’s diploma after he condemned Israel’s deadly war on Gaza during his graduation ceremony speech.
On Wednesday, Logan Rozos, an undergraduate student speaker from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, delivered his commencement speech in which he said: “The only thing that is appropriate to say in this time and to a group this large is a recognition of the atrocities currently happening in Palestine.”
Following Rozos’s speech, NYU released a statement saying that it “strongly denounces the choice by a student at the Gallatin School’s graduation today … to misuse his role as student speaker to express his personal and one-sided political views”.
As of Thursday morning, Rozos’s student profile on NYU Gallatin’s website appeared to have been taken down, with a message saying: “Page or File Not Found (404 Error)”.

From Politico 🇻🇦 A group of hardline conservative Catholics are pushing for the next pope to be better aligned to their worldview — and they don’t seem afraid to use smear tactics to discredit candidates they don’t like.
With cardinals set to enter the Sistine Chapel on May 7 to begin electing the next pope, enemies of the late Pope Francis, within and outside the group who will be choosing him, are mobilizing. A vocal faction who have discredited Francis as a heretic, the anti-pope and even the “Anti-Christ” for his supposedly liberal outlook, have been waiting in the wings. Now they see the time to strike.
Conservatives were angered by Francis’ more conciliatory stance on same-sex unions and divorce, defense of migrants, and a Vatican deal with China that gave Beijing a say in the appointment of Catholic bishops.

From the Associated Press 🇳🇿 A New Zealand parliamentary committee has recommended the unprecedented suspensions of three Māori lawmakers for performing a protest haka in the debating chamber last year.
The haka is a chanting dance of challenge of great cultural importance in New Zealand, and the three lawmakers from Te Pāti Māori, the Māori party, performed one to oppose a controversial bill that would have redefined the country’s founding document.
A committee Wednesday recommended record suspensions and severe censure — the harshest penalties ever assigned to New Zealand parliamentarians — after finding the trio in contempt of Parliament.
Government bloc lawmakers, who hold the majority, are expected to endorse the penalties in a vote Tuesday.
The recommendations were the latest twist in the fraught saga over the bill, now defeated, that opponents said would have provoked constitutional havoc and reversed decades of progress for Māori, New Zealand’s Indigenous people.

From the Guardian 🇵🇹 The leader of Portugal’s far-right Chega party has been taken to hospital after another collapse during a rally days before the country votes in its third snap election since 2022.
André Ventura, whose brash, blunt leadership style has helped make the anti-immigration party Portugal’s third biggest political force, was taken ill at an event in the southern town of Odemira on Thursday, two days after a similar episode.
Videos from the rally showed Ventura, 42, grabbing his chest and trying to undo his tie before falling into the arms of aides who carried him away. He was taken to a local clinic and then transferred to a hospital in Setúbal, near Lisbon, to undergo a medical procedure.

From France24 🇸🇻 🇺🇸 🇻🇪 A law firm hired by the Venezuelan government said that it had been unable to visit the migrants in the mega-prison where they are locked up.
The lawyers are seeking "proof of life," but say they have come up against a wall of silence from President Nayib Bukele's administration and the Central American nation's justice system.
Grupo Ortega filed a habeas corpus petition with the Supreme Court on March 24 seeking an end to what it calls the "illegal detention" of the Venezuelans, but is still waiting for a ruling.
"They are treating them like common criminals," lawyer Salvador Rios said, after the migrants were shown dressed in prison clothing, shackled and with shaved heads.
"This is torture," both physical and psychological, Rios said in an interview with AFP.
The lawyers delivered a letter in early May to Bukele, a key ally of Trump, requesting authorization to visit the Venezuelans, but so far without success.

From Barron’s 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Sunday that unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state would force Israel to take "unilateral actions", following announcements by several countries that they plan to take such a step.
"There have been talks about an initiative to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state... any attempt to do so unilaterally will only harm future prospects for a bilateral process and will push us for unilateral actions in response," Saar said.

From the Guardian 🇬🇧 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 A UK-based advocacy group for Israel has been criticised for suggesting a reduction in obesity resulting from the war in Gaza may increase life expectancy there.
The comments by UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI), which came amid warnings of impending famine in Gaza, were condemned as “sickening” by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC).

From Reuters 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 An Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday killed a well-known Palestinian journalist whom it accused of working with Hamas and was recovering in hospital from an earlier strike, the territory's health ministry said.
Israel has accused Hassan Aslih, who has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media platforms, of taking part in the October 7, 2023 attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas that triggered the war in Gaza.
Israel's military said it hit a "Hamas command center" beneath the hospital. Hamas denies exploiting hospitals and civilian properties for military purposes.
In a separate statement about the Nasser Hospital strike, the Israeli military said it "eliminated significant Hamas terrorists" in Nasser Hospital, among them Aslih, who it said had "operated under the guise of a journalist".

From the Associated Press 🇺🇸 🇿🇦 A group of 49 white South Africans departed their homeland Sunday for the United States on a private charter plane having been offered refugee status by the Trump administration under a new program announced in February.
The group, which included families and small children, was due to arrive at Dulles International Airport outside Washington on Monday morning local time, according to Collen Msibi, a spokesperson for South Africa’s transport ministry.
They are the first Afrikaners — a white minority group in South Africa — to be relocated after U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Feb. 7 accusing South Africa’s Black-led government of racial discrimination against them and announcing a program to offer them relocation to America.
The South African government said it is “completely false” that Afrikaners are being persecuted.

From the Associated Press 🇺🇸 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 A group of American security contractors, ex-military officers and humanitarian aid officials is proposing to take over the distribution of food and other supplies in Gaza based on plans similar to ones designed by Israel.
The Associated Press obtained a proposal from the newly created group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, to implement a new aid distribution system supplanting the current one run by the U.N. and other international aid agencies. The U.N. and aid groups have rejected Israel’s moves to control aid distribution.
Israel has blocked food, fuel, medicine and all other supplies from entering Gaza for 10 weeks, worsening a humanitarian crisis for 2.3 million Palestinians. It has said it won’t allow aid back in until a system is in place that gives it control over distribution.
A U.N. official said last week that Israel’s plans would “weaponize aid” by placing restrictions on who is eligible to receive it.
The Trump administration supports the new group’s proposal, said a person involved in it. The person said GHF would work “within the confines” set by Israel on aid. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a plan not yet made public.

From MondoWeiss 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 Israeli soldiers are using the photo of murdered American-Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh for target practice.
This is one of the revelations in the newly released Zeteo documentary “Who Killed Shireen.” The film exposes previously unreported details around the murder of the famous Al Jazeera journalist by an Israeli sniper in Jenin on May 11, 2022, including the identity of the sniper who assassinated Abu Akleh. It also reveals how the Biden administration knew from the very beginning, via an Israeli general, that it was an Israeli soldier who shot her, but they acted as if they knew nothing, and made any investigations classified so as to obscure the story.
But beyond the startling details and identities, I keep coming back to the fact that those soldiers used her photo for target practice. It’s almost impossible to wrap one’s head around it.
The explanation seems to be as follows: Abu Akleh’s murderer, Alon Scagio, was moved out of the elite Duvdevan unit following her killing to a senior position in another unit, which distanced him from any investigation. His comrades in the Duvdevan unit considered this an insult for which they would figuratively take “revenge” on Abu Akleh by shooting at her face for target practice. This is based on the testimony of Scagio’s friend from the Duvdevan unit.

From the Associated Press 🇮🇳 🇲🇲 Indian authorities allegedly forced dozens of Rohingya refugees off a naval vessel into the sea near Myanmar last week after providing them with life jackets, a United Nations agency, family members of the refugees and their lawyer said.
The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, in a statement on Thursday, said at least 40 Rohingya refugees were detained in New Delhi and cast into the sea by the Indian navy near the maritime border with Myanmar. The refugees — including children, women and older people — swam ashore, but their whereabouts in Myanmar remain unknown, the agency said.
Five Rohingya refugees on Friday confirmed to the Associated Press that their family members were part of the group that were detained by Indian authorities on May 6. The group, including 15 Christians, were flown in an aircraft and later cast into the sea by Indian navy authorities on May 8, they said.
