Very interesting new neuroscience paper, on brain regions associated with political allegiance. Vietnam vets with damage to the prefrontal cortex showed an increased intensity in their political affiliation (regardless of the side of the political spectrum they were on).
Recent research on hormonal contraception showed that it actually shrinks a key part of the prefrontal cortex called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Could it be, then, that widespread use of the contraceptive pill--by altering the prefrontal cortex--is driving the well-known drift of young women further and further to the left? It's quite possible.
