"The gift of the choleric, fiery, temperament is desire; the challenge, to direct the desire rightly. The sanguine, airy, temperament has its mental powers (not necessarily the same as what is now called intelligence); its common problem that of knowing everything and understanding nothing. The melancholic, earthy, temperament is prone to bitterness and inertia, but once moved has a practicality and solidity of approach. The phlegmatic, watery, complexion is traditionally the most beset with emotional difficulties, usually manifesting as self-indulgence and apathy.
Against this background the planets can be judged: Mars powerfully placed in Aries, for instance, will vivify a phlegmatic temperament. It is a sorry chart indeed that has no strong point anywhere with which to work."
