Earth Day: Compassion and Wisdom Benefit Our Planet
Buddhist teachings offer profound insights into how we can relate more compassionately and mindfully to the environment—an especially meaningful reflection for Earth Day, celebrated April 22 around the world. Central to Buddhism is the principle of interconnectedness, the understanding that all beings and elements of the natural world are deeply linked. This view encourages respect for nature, recognizing that harming the earth ultimately harms ourselves.

In Buddhist literature we often read about the dangers and threats in the environment as something to guard against. At the same time there are many sūtras with passages describing the Dharma with analogies to natural sounds and elements of the environment. Teachings on mindfulness and nonharming foster a deeper awareness of how our choices affect the planet, and urge us to minimize suffering for all beings, which includes their ecosystems. Descriptions of the heaven and hell realms provide either blissful or frightening environments that reflect the state of our mind.

For further reading on how mindfulness of our actions and thoughts can impact the environment, we recommend The Application of Mindfulness of the Sacred Dharma (Toh 287). This sūtra offers a comprehensive discourse on the karmic results of virtuous and nonvirtuous actions.

New Publications
This week, we introduce three new texts that are praises to the Buddha in one verse, two verses, and six verses. These are part of a set of five texts that were used for recitation in India—first individually, then becoming popular as a set that was later incorporated into the dhāraṇī collections of Nepal. They are sometimes mentioned as texts for recitation in preliminary practices.

Click the titles below to read and recite these dhāraṇīs, and gain the benefits of praising the Buddha.
The Single Stanza (Toh 323): The shortest of these texts is a single stanza, which praises the Buddha in one verse. It states that there is no ascetic equal to the Buddha, either among the gods or in the ordinary world.

The Two Stanza Dhāraṇī (Toh 143/918): This dhāraṇī consists of two initial verses that enumerate eight obscurations and their antidote—the Mahāyāna teachings—followed by a dhāraṇī and three verses that list the ten beneficial results of reciting the text.

The Four Stanzas (Toh 324): Consisting of six verses in total, this text is a praise to the Buddha, to the places associated with his presence, and to stūpas. The praise itself comprises the first four verses, hence the text’s title. The last two verses explain the origin of the text and the benefits that accrue from its recitation.
