Over a millenium before Martin Luther, the early church fathers were telling the faithful to abide by the principle of Sola Scriptura. Here below we see St. Augustine of Hippo, writing at around AD 400. Note that what Augustine refers to here as “plenary councils” were none other than the Ecumenical Councils held for all of Christendom. Already in Augustine’s time, there had been two Ecumenical Councils, the 1st Council of Nicea (AD 325) and the 1st Council of Constantinople (AD 381).

But who can fail to be aware that the sacred canon of Scripture, both of the Old and New Testament, is confined within its own limits, and that it stands so absolutely in a superior position to all later letters of the bishops, that about it we can hold no manner of doubt or disputation whether what is confessedly contained in it is right and true; but that all the letters of bishops which have been written, or are being written, since the closing of the canon, are liable to be refuted if there be anything contained in them which strays from the truth, either by the discourse of some one who happens to be wiser in the matter than themselves, or by the weightier authority and more learned experience of other bishops, by the authority of Councils; and further, that the Councils themselves, which are held in the several districts and provinces, must yield, beyond all possibility of doubt, to the authority of plenary Councils which are formed for the whole Christian world; and that even of the plenary Councils, the earlier are often corrected by those which follow them, when, by some actual experiment, things are brought to light which were before concealed, and that is known which previously lay hid, and this without any whirlwind of sacrilegious pride, without any puffing of the neck through arrogance, without any strife of envious hatred, simply with holy humility, catholic peace, and Christian charity?

Among all those who have been born of women, there has not risen a greater than John Calvin; no age before him ever produced his equal, and no age afterwards has seen his rival.

-Charles Spurgeon. The Autobiography of Charles H. Spurgeon II, 372 (1899).

The longer I live, the clearer does it appear that John Calvin’s system is the nearest to perfection.

-Charles Spurgeon, quoted by G. Holden Pike (Editor of The Sword & the Trowel), The Life and Work of Charles Haddon Spurgeon IV, 197 (1894).

Is it true that Calvinists deny Free Will?

This is a frequent accusation made against Calvinist Protestants; as a matter of fact, it is a misunderstanding of the Calvinist position. Calvin himself addressed the matter of how free will fit into —and did not contradict— his interpretation of the Biblical doctrine of predestination. In refuting the accusations leveled by the Roman Catholic theologian Albertus Phigius, he wrote The Bondage and Liberation of the Will; A Defense of the Orthodox Doctrine of Human Choice Against Phigius. Much of his theology related to this question can also be found in his Institutes of the Christian Religion. Calvin explained that free will is indeed a human faculty, and that our repentance and faith in Christ are indeed a free will choice. However, the human will is limited —held in bondage— by our concupiscence, i.e. our carnal and sinful nature (Total Depravity). It is necessary therefore, for God’s Irresistible Grace to act in a person’s inner being, liberating them from this bondage and enabling them to exercise their free will to make an otherwise impossible choice of repentance and faith. As the Apostle Paul put it, “it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Many Christians will be surprised to find out that Calvin wasn’t the first one to understand things in this way. As a matter of fact, Augustine of Hippo (AD 354-430) —whom Calvin studied extensively— had the exact take as Calvin when it came to predestination. In his treatise On the Predestination of the Saints, Augustine used scripture to show that our faith was the gift of God (Book I, chapter 3), and that even our free-will choice was a result of God’s grace acting upon us (Book I, chapter 7). In the latter chapter, Augustine even confesses that he’d been in error previously, when he held a belief that was more in line with those we recognise today in Catholic and Orthodox Christians, as well as Protestants who adhere to Jacobus Arminius’ stance on predestination. He attributed his correction in the matter to the teachings of Cyprian of Carthage (AD 210-258).

An excellent sermon by pastor Daniel Nealon of Deer Creek Church in Littleton, Colorado. 🇺🇸 The topic is the letter of Christ to the Christian church in Ephesus, found in the Book of Revelation. We are reminded —and warned— that while theology, apologetics, and the pursuit of Orthodoxy are excellent endeavors, we must take care never to lose sight of the love of Christ.

John 15:12
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

1 John 3:10-11
By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

1 John 3:23-24
And this is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as He has commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him.

That man is truly humble who neither claims any personal merit in the sight of God, nor proudly despises his brethren, nor aims at being thought superior to them, but reckons it enough that he is one of the members of Christ, and desires nothing more than that the head alone should be exalted.

-John Calvin, Commentary on Matthew 18:6.

Matthew 6:7-8
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions (Greek: battalogesete; from battalogeó, “to stammer, to repeat”; from battos “stammerer” and logos “word”) as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
