Was Peter a Double Agent From the Sanhedrin?

No, and it's absolutely ludicrous to fall for such post-modernist drivel. Two claims have been asserted by a handful of Jewish provocateurs; that Saint Peter (and sometimes Paul) was a secret agent sent by the Sanhedrin to neutralize early Christianity,¹ and that modern Jews thus fast for Peter/Paul on the Ninth of Tevet for their supposed roles in “infiltrating” the Nazarene movement.²

Despite the spark of this controversial idea in recent years, Rabbi Michael Skobac discusses how the Italian Talmudic scholar Samuel Lazzatto (Shamal) debunked the fringe conspiracy theories as nothing more than a "medieval Jewish coping mechanism against the oppression of the Church." Interestingly, these claims have found themselves circulated in online neo-pagan and atheist circles.

Dr. Raymond Apple, one of the most revered rabbis of Australia, explained:

The claim that he [Saint Peter] wrote part of Nishmat is rejected by Rashi (Machzor Vitry, p. 282), who argues that the real author is Shimon ben Shetach and that the legend confused two Simons. Rashi’s grandson Rabbenu Tam still believes that this Simon was a Jewish liturgical poet and wrote a Yom Kippur hymn, "Etein Tehillah" ("I will utter praise"). Some liturgists think that Simon Peter also wrote the benediction "Ahavah Rabbah" ("You loved us with exceeding love") which precedes the morning Shema, but THIS TOO IS HIGHLY IMPROBABLE.

We can be sure that many of these myths were rooted from the Sefer Toledot Yeshu, a 10th-century Jewish polemical containing immensely blasphemous mockeries and slanders against Jesus, his mother, and the apostles. In plain terms, the text is a compilation of centuries of Talmudic jokes and scoffs against the early Christians.

THE CROSS IS REVELATION

It does not reveal any particular thing, but God and man. It reveals who God is and who man is.

There is a curious presentiment of this situation in Greek philosophy: Plato's image of the crucified "just man".

In the Republic the great philosopher asks what is likely to be the position of a completely just man in this world. He comes to the conclusion that a man's righteousness is only complete and guaranteed when he takes on the appearance of unrighteousness, for only then is it clear that he does not follow the opinion of men but pursues justice only for its own sake.

So according to Plato the truly just man must be misunderstood and persecuted in this world; indeed, Plato goes so far as to write:

"They will say that our just man will be scourged, racked, fettered, will have his eyes burnt out, and at last, after all manner of suffering, will be crucified..."
