Spain achieved net zero this week. Zero emissions. Zero electricity. Zero answers.

The following is my conjecture so take with a grain of salt... Spain was just boasting that they had enough renewables (ie intermittent power generators) to run 100% of their grid. But that power generation is subject to clouds and wind. No problem, right, they'll just buy power from France! They maxed out the interconnect to france at 3% of the spanish grid's need and that was enough to pull the EU grid down 0.15hz quickly... France cut the interconnect and the spanish grid, having lost 3% of it's power sources died with 5 seconds.

Let me put that in different terms... a sudden change of 3% can make an entire country's electric grid collapse in 5 seconds. Got it? Great!

The politicians don't seem to get it. Yeah, solar is great, but it needs batteries. Running 20% or 100% of a grid on a source of power that can vanish in under a minute does not pair well with coal or nuke that can take 30 minutes to spool up. Keep in mind, they are 5 seconds from collapse at any moment. If the politicians were smart, they'd mandate a battery co-located at each solar farm that had the ability to feed the grid the same amount of power the solar farm does but for 30 minutes.... those same 30 minutes it takes the coal plant to spool up. But no grid operator does this.

Do you know that hydro plants can make full power in seconds? They just turn on a valve and let water flow. Hey, this is better than batteries!!! Oh but now we find that 60% of spanish hydro stations are offline for maintenance at the same time. This is what happens when you put DEI hires in or new young engineers that don't understand the delicate balance the system is in. I'm also reminded that the reservior that feeds Los Angeles was drained for maintenance for 8 months prior to the fire last year. hmm.... more people in charge that don't understand the interwoven systems.

How does this relate to off the grid? Electricty represents a lot of conveniences but it also gives us water for sanitation and hygiene. It gives us a way to keep food from spoiling. The prognosis for the grid doesn't look good between the politicians' demands and the incompetent people assigned to run these resources.

Since we can't control what the grid does, the choice is to make our own grid at each of our houses. What got me started on solar was 1)power out for 2 weeks in 2015 following a hurricane, 2)power goes out here 75 hours a year since we are so far out of town. At this moment, I'm only connected to the grid when my batteries are at 100% and I'm selling power... that's about 6 hours a day. A few days ago, I forced my system to stay connected to the grid and two days in a row the power blinked off. I can only imagine it'll get worse in the future.

Even if you just start small with a 100ah server rack battery and a small 3kw inverter, you can run your fridge and a well pump. The point is, see what's coming and get in front of it.

You know one of the things I'm debating right now in a building that is similar to that is putting concrete posts underneath every single wooden post and just raising the barn slightly

For any of you that 3D print on a regular basis as I do I strongly suggest you stockpile filament because I have watched the prices of it go up almost 30% in the last month. I print a lot of things for around the house out of convenience. I strongly believe a 3D printer should be part of a preppers kit especially when they're going to stay at home or hunker down one of the plastics that you may want to get accustomed to is petg is readily available it's what most water bottles have made of soda bottles and so forth so in the event you had to actually make your own you would be able to be prepared to use it specifically. P e t g is not supposed to be UV safe however I've printed items that have been outside as long as ASA filament and had zero warpage and zero color change a lot of parts have been out there for over a year. Just a word of advice because there's really not much you can't create when you have all the time in the world because you're not going anywhere.

Goofy story du jour. The barn roof structure is sitting on the ground. I went under it today with a hammer in one hand and a pry bar in the other. Remember this later. Some wasps in the peak of the roof (now at eye level) decided to attack me. So one landed on my temple and started stinging me. Remember that hammer? I konked myself in the head with the claw trying to swat that wasp. Got a nice cut on my scalp for the trouble. Wife has spent the rest of the day calling me "hammer head".

Finished knocking down old pole barn today. We considered rehabing it but 10 of the 15 6x6 posts were rotting at the ground. So I went around in the man bucket on the other tractor and cut a hinge in the top of each post... then all around on the bottom. Some posts were so rotted they didnt' even break at the hinge, they broke flush with the ground. I thought it better to walk beside the tractor incase the building went the wrong way, I could make a like a tree and leave.

Substitute teacher in SHOCK after discovering how badly kids in schools are struggling with basic math.

Schools are more focused on pushing radical gender ideology instead of teaching them reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Homeschool your kids!

Can rack... the bottom shelves are 14' long, the top are divided into two sections. those dividers are plastic drywall corners.

Everybody wants to be a cowboy 'till it's time to do cowboy stuff
Also of note... Anderson makes "Power poles". These are a genderless high current connector. Been using 30amp versions of them on my ham gear since the 90's. They also make larger form factors up to 300amps. For my system, since I have so many batteries, no single battery will ever see more than 60amps, I'll use the SB120 120amp connectors.

For you, subtract one battery from your system and take the total wattage of your inverter and spread it to the remaining batteries. This will determine the max amps for any one battery.

You know if you do it one post at a time dig a hole put one of those cardboard cylinders in the ground fill it with concrete you could get it done and cut it all the way off to the rotted section but it depends on how high The Rotten wood goes
