The reason I did it is because we put $350 billion or so into it, whereas Europe only put $100 billion into it. So we have to get some of that investment back. I felt stupid. You know, they loaned the money, and Biden gave them $350 billion in cash and military hardware.
350 billion — and we got nothing. And I felt awkward, being the head of a country where Europe gets its money back, and in much smaller amounts, and we get nothing. So I came to them and said: look, we need to get access to rare earth elements. They have excellent rare earth resources — these are certain minerals, materials that are not available everywhere. This is their major asset.
And today we made a deal where, theoretically, we'll get a lot more than that 350 billion. I just wanted to protect our interests. I didn't want to be foolish again.
