The Nag Hammadi Library
The Nag Hammadi Library, also known as the Chenoboskion Manuscripts or the Gnostic Gospels, is a remarkable collection of 13 ancient papyrus codices containing 52 texts, primarily Gnostic Christian writings, alongside hermetic and philosophical works, including fragments of Plato's Republic. Discovered in December 1945 near the village of Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt, these manuscripts were unearthed by Muhammad Ali al-Samman, a local farmer, and his brother while digging for natural fertilizer near the Jabal al-Tarif cliffs. They found a large, sealed clay jar with leather-bound papyrus codices. Some were damaged or lost during their initial handling and later trade.
Written in Coptic but likely translated from Greek originals dating to the 1st–4th centuries AD, the texts include previously unknown works such as the Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Philip, and Apocryphon of John, offering insights into Gnosticism, a mystical tradition emphasizing esoteric knowledge (gnosis) for salvation. Many of these texts were likely hidden, possibly by monks, to protect them from destruction during the 4th century when emerging Christian orthodoxy marginalized non-canonical writings. By 1947, scholars like Jean Doresse and James M. Robinson recognized the manuscripts’ significance, revealing a suppressed side of early Christianity. The Egyptian government nationalized most of the codices in the 1950s, and they are now kept preserved at the Coptic Museum in Cairo, where they have been studied extensively.
