The word alchemy is believed to stem from PIE *ǵʰew- meaning "to pour." Germanic language did not form words from the root form *ǵʰew- but rather from an extension of it *ǵʰewd- which holds the same meaning. In Germanic we have the PIE root yielding words such as:
• Old English - ġēotan = "to pour, shed blood/tears/sweat, cast metals."
• Old Norse - gjóta = "to pour, to cast, to spawn."
What is most fascinating is that the Odinic name Gautr is derived from gjóta and yields the meaning "He from Whom Man Pours Forth." In this station He is the Divine Progenitor outwardly viewed as Gaut of the Gautar (Goths) and indeed to a great extent they are viewed as the fountainhead of our Folk with their name even being used to refer to an exceptional warrior "the brave Goth of the sword, sent his enemies to Hel."
I also find the correlation between Gautr and alchemy fascinating in the sense that indeed He is a practitioner of that inner alchemical work many recognize today as can be glimpsed in the Hávamál.
