🎧 Trump calls for 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia

💬 President Donald Trump has called for an immediate 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The announcement follows a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. On Thursday, local time, President Trump urged both Russia and Ukraine to agree to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, warning that failure to comply would result in additional sanctions from the United States and its allies. In the announcement on his Truth Social account, he emphasized that both nations would be held accountable for respecting the ceasefire. He also expressed willingness to facilitate negotiations toward a broader peace agreement. President Zelenskyy confirmed his call with President Trump earlier and said Ukraine remains willing to negotiate. Zelenskyy also said the ratified minerals deal with the U.S. was a "truly historic document that opens up many new opportunities." The conversation between the two leaders came just as the Kremlin proposed a limited three-day ceasefire to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Russia's Victory Day.

🎧 At least 40 killed in Iran port explosion

💬 A deadly explosion at a port in Iran on Saturday killed dozens, and left over a thousand others injured.
Reports point to the possibility of chemicals used to make missile propellant being behind the explosion.

A massive explosion at the port of Bandar Abbas on Saturday killed at least forty people,.. and left at least a thousand others injured.
According to eyewitnesses and surveillance footage,.. chemicals in an area with shipping containers caught fire, setting off the massive explosion.
According to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, quoting an Iranian official,.. the explosion was likely due to containers of chemicals, but the official did not elaborate on what type of chemical.
Iran's national oil company also explained that the explosion was "not related to refineries, fuel tanks, or oil pipelines" in the area.

The deadly explosion on Saturday was also a grim reminder of another massive explosion in Beirut nearly five years ago.
The similarity in the smoke created from the blast also shed light on what type of chemical could have been involved.
Video and images from CNN showed orange-brown smoke rising from the port, suggesting that a chemical such as sodium or ammonia was involved.
The New York Times also reported on Sunday, that a person with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said what exploded in the incident was sodium perchlorate, a major ingredient in solid fuel for missiles.
Other experts have said that ammonium nitrate was behind the deadly blast, the same chemical involved in the 2020 Beirut explosion.

🎧 Zelenskyy, U.S. special envoy headed to Türkiye for talks

💬 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and special envoys from the U.S. are headed to Türkiye for peace talks with Russia.
However, the Kremlin remains silent on whether President Vladimir Putin will be taking part in the talks himself.
Lee Seung-jae has more.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy left for Ankara on Tuesday, in the hopes of getting a ceasefire agreement with Moscow.
However the Ukrainian president said that he would be going to Istanbul, where Thursday's talks will be held,.. if Russian President Vladimir Putin attends the talks himself,.. as he called on the Russian leader to come to the negotiation talks.

"We will wait for the meeting with Putin in Türkiye, If Putin is ready to meet, not only for media purposes but in real life, then on the level of leaders, we will do everything to agree on a ceasefire because I must reach a deal about a ceasefire with him, because he is the only person to decide."
Over on the U.S. side, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be headed to Istanbul, along with the U.S. Special Envoys for the Middle East and Ukraine, Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg.
The U.S. officials will look to broker a ceasefire deal, hoping Moscow will agree to a comprehensive 30-day ceasefire agreement.
According to Washington, Kyiv has already agreed to such a deal.
While Russian officials will be taking part in the negotiation talks in Istanbul, the Kremlin has remained silent on who's going to represent their side at the talks.
According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Russia is continuing its preparations for the upcoming talks, but remained tight-lipped on whether its leader will be traveling to Türkiye, as well.

The U.S., Russia and Ukraine will meet in Istanbul on Thursday to discuss a ceasefire for the over-three-year-long war.

🎧 Putin, Xi pledge to deepen ties, urge other nations to drop sanctions against N. Korea

💬 Leaders of Russia and China have met in Moscow seeking a deeper partnership, apparently with the United States in mind.
Their agenda also covered urging the international community to abandon sanctions on North Korea.
Our Choi Soo-hyung has more.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Moscow on Thursday, local time, and signed a joint statement where they pledged to strengthen cooperation in all areas, including military ties.
During their talks in the Kremlin, the two leaders cast themselves as "defenders of a new world order no longer dominated by the U.S.," amid growing pressure from the West.

"Our common heroic past and combat brotherhood are a reliable foundation for the development and strengthening of Russian-Chinese relations. And these relations have reached the highest level in history."

The two sides also addressed global issues, including those related to North Korea.
They called on other countries to drop sanctions against Pyongyang, while saying issues on the Korean Peninsula must be resolved "only through diplomatic means."

" China and Russia will continue to stand together, firmly safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core, and international order based on international law, and continue to promote an equal and orderly multi-polar world.”

One expert suggested the reason Russia and China are backing North Korea could be because of the North's role in countering threats from the West.

"I can only speculate that North Korea is playing an important role in this anti-Western strategy. In the immediate circumstances, it's providing weaponry, it's providing artillery, it's providing soldiers, and, of course, it's testing these short-range missiles for export, for use in other battlefields as well. So it may be that North Korea is simply 'useful' in this respect for both the great powers China and Russia."

Xi and other world leaders attended the annual Victory Day military parade in Moscow on Friday, to mark the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two.
This was the first time in 10 years for the Chinese leader to attend the event.

At the parade Putin also met with a North Korean military delegation and Sin Hong-chol, the North's ambassador to Russia, saying Russia supports those participating in the "special military operation" in Ukraine.

The South Korean government earlier said it had received an invitation from Russia, but decided not to attend.
This is likely because sending a senior official to the parade showcasing Russia's military capabilities could in itself send the wrong signal, especially at a time when Pyongyang and Moscow have been continuing arms cooperation, which is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
