Upon the Lochs and Lands of Scotland there is perhaps no more notable a God than Cailleach Beira. It is she who crafted the land of Scotland itself and is Mother of the many Gods and Giants who call this land home. So ancient is she that she has long lost count to the winters and years she has been here, though by her own word she has seen when land was water and water was land. Some of this shifting however was no doubt crafted by her hand during her creation of the Scottish landscape, though she herself may have forgot due to time.
Hyperborean Radio.
I was commissioned to paint this bewitching display of Scottish myth & folklore. Cailleach Beira, a rather important figure to the Gaels, become the subject of much concentration and attention to detail as I did my best to portray her accordingly, shedding light on the many elements which make up the many qualities of her being.
I drew inspiration from vintage photographs (mostly from the 1880s) of rural ladies of Scotland (in the fields) - specifically elderly - to get an idea of how Beira, Queen of Winter, would appear as an "old woman" or "hag" (
Now. of course, being Scotland, I chose a stormy or brooding atmosphere 😆 (

without giving it away too much) within a Scottish setting. The project itself was a lot of fun because I really want to hone my skills of painting the Gods, folklore, legends, heroes, etc., and with each one, I get better. Now. of course, being Scotland, I chose a stormy or brooding atmosphere 😆 (
I couldn't help myself) overshadowing the Scottish coastline. Though, it does create an interesting contrast between the light and dark tones, thus creating the required depth. A Scottish wild cat, loyal to Beira, I thought would be appropriate because most people often depict her with an owl or stag, but they do not really scream Scottish, whereas a Scottish wild cat does.Anyway, thank you for your patience; I hope I delivered a high-quality painting of Beira. I've removed the previous post as I only intended it to be up for a day. But thank you once more.
After thinking about it, I've decided to resume painting, as I have a lot to do. I'll upload painting 02 of "Everyday Paganism" some time soon
I've made a tentative start on this one. I think it's going to look epic, once I figure out the direction I want to take.

Honor the Heroic Dead.
Today is Memorial Day or Decoration Day as it is also known. A day to honor the Dead, reaching back to Folk Customs of decorating the Graves of Our Loved Ones at the Dawn of Summer. Picnics, Wreathes and Stories shared beside the grave. In time it came to be known as a day specifically to honor Fallen Soldiers. This Vernal All-Souls Day honoring the ranks of Valhalla, Elysium and Fiddlers Green is symbolized with the Poppy, every bloom a drop of blood shed by the soldiers in service to their people.
Remember the Fallen, but do not give into despair or Melancholy. Rejoice! Revel! For that is what they fight for, in this realm and those beyond.
Let the Halls of the Heroic Dead and All those We love, hear in our song and our stories that their sacrifice was not in vain.
And May The Gods Bless We The People.
