How the Vatican Elects a New Pope — Inside the Secretive Sistine Chapel Conclave
The election of a new pope follows strict procedures outlined in the 1996 apostolic constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, issued by Pope John Paul II. Here’s a concise overview:
Only cardinals under 80 (currently 135) are eligible to vote. They reside at Saint Martha’s House and attend Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica on the first morning. That afternoon, they enter the Sistine Chapel dressed in liturgical robes, swear oaths, and are sealed inside. The ceremony begins with the traditional call “Extra omnes” (“Everyone out”), ensuring total isolation.
Three cardinals are randomly selected to count votes, three to collect ballots from the ill, and three to verify results. Each cardinal writes a name on a ballot under the phrase “I elect as Supreme Pontiff,” folds it twice, and places it into a chalice on the altar after a formal Latin oath.
Votes are mixed, counted, and read aloud. If no candidate reaches a two-thirds majority, up to four rounds of voting occur daily—two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Ballots are burned after each round: black smoke signals no result, white smoke means a new pope has been elected.
If no decision is reached after three days, the cardinals pause for prayer before resuming voting. Once a pope is chosen, he is asked if he accepts and what name he chooses. After acceptance, he becomes the Bishop of Rome and the head of the Catholic Church. The senior cardinal then announces “Habemus Papam” (“We have a pope”) and the new pontiff gives his first blessing from St. Peter’s balcony.

Hamas Discusses Gaza Negotiations in Ankara
A senior Hamas delegation met today in Ankara with Turkish intelligence chief İbrahim Kalın to discuss the ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
Led by Political Council head Mohammed Darwish, the delegation reiterated its willingness to “immediately reach a comprehensive prisoner exchange deal in return for halting the war, withdrawing from the Strip, initiating reconstruction, and lifting the blockade.” The group also endorsed Egypt’s proposal to establish a special committee for administering Gaza, composed of independents and professional national figures.
Kalın outlined Turkey’s efforts to achieve a ceasefire and ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing Ankara’s role in delivering aid and coordinating international efforts. He also reaffirmed Turkey’s opposition to Israel’s expansionist and occupation policies, and to any new acts of annexation.

US Supreme Court Suspends Deportation of Venezuelan Migrants Under 18th-Century Law
The US Supreme Court has halted the deportation of Venezuelan migrants detained under the Alien Enemies Act, a law from 1798. This decision followed an emergency petition filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of detainees in a Texas facility. The Court ordered that no one in this group be deported until further notice.
The Trump administration invoked the law last month to detain and deport Venezuelan migrants accused of links to the Tren de Aragua, a gang designated as a terrorist organization. However, lawyers argue that many detainees were targeted due to their tattoos, not any criminal activity.
The Alien Enemies Act has rarely been used, typically only during wartime, such as against Japanese and German nationals in World War II. Some of the deported Venezuelans have been sent to a high-security prison in El Salvador, raising concerns over their rights and due process.

Hezbollah Secretary-General, Sheikh Naim Qassem:
• "The resistance emerged as a response, especially when the Lebanese state is unable to protect its citizens."
• "The ceasefire is a direct outcome of the resistance’s steadfastness—without it, "Israel" would have continued its aggression."
• "'Israel' seeks to occupy large parts of Lebanon and annex them to occupied Palestine."
• "We are currently in a diplomatic phase, but the window for diplomacy is limited."
• "We have options, we fear nothing, and we will act at the time of our choosing."
• "Our stance is driven by principle, not by gains or losses—and that principle is resistance."
• "The resistance’s weapons are strictly directed at the Israeli enemy."
• "The core issue in Lebanon is not the resistance’s weapons, but the ongoing Israeli occupation."
• "We will not surrender, and we are not intimidated by threats from the US or "Israel"—we are ready for confrontation."
• "Any attempt to forcibly disarm the resistance would serve "Israel" and spark a strife that will not happen."
• "We will not allow anyone to disarm Hezbollah or the resistance."
• "We will confront any effort to attack or disarm the resistance just as we confronted "Israel"."
• "The ceasefire agreement applies only to the area south of the Litani River—we have met all our obligations."
• "Our participation in implementing Resolution 1701 post-ceasefire depends solely on dialogue."
• "Message exchanges with the president have been positive and will continue in that direction."
• "We will not discuss the national defense strategy through the media, nor will we set a deadline for dialogue."
• "Hezbollah has fulfilled its part—it is now up to "Israel" to do the same."
