I swear, if Harvard said “literally fly to the Moon and you get in,” we would have kids applying from orbit before early decision.

My first Valera Notes post came out on August 6, 2021.

Back then, Freshman Alumni had just two Ivy admits: Umid and Rustam.

After almost four years of info posts, work announcements, life updates, and stories, we are approaching 5,000 subscribers.

Thanks for being a part of this journey!

The website they were building was YouTube. They co-founded it.

I had a student cry in my recent consultation.

They were such a bright student. Unfortunately, though, they were not well-positioned for Ivy League admissions.

My professional duty was to say that it would take 2–3 years to prepare for competitive admissions. Of course, it was hard news.

We ended our meeting midway, and I refunded half of the consultation.

My strategy has been to apply pressure to see if students are ready for the rat race of Ivy League education.

I do not want to do this. But sometimes, that is what it takes. Your performance must match your ambitions.

Lately, I have started to doubt whether this approach works with the younger generation. In response, I am learning to preserve my directness while presenting my advice with greater sensitivity.

That said, though most of my time goes into the Admissions Program, Full Support, Scholars, and organizational tasks, I opened as many consultation slots in May as I could.

Join with caution. I have not yet fully transitioned to being a feedback Teddy Bear. So, brace yourselves. You may hear what you need to hear, not what you want.

"I am a Singaporean, senator."

Just learned that Shou Zi Chew, TikTok's CEO, was scheduled to give a graduation speech at Yale-NUS tomorrow.

Apparently, he had an emergency, so the speech could be canceled. I sure hope he still makes it. But we shall see.

Will be there for the graduation of my close friend's sister and for Yale-NUS's last graduating class.

2024: Sayfullo (Princeton) and Abdulaziz (Harvard) participated in Zakovat.

Everyone joined Zakovat.

2025: Azizbek (Harvard) gets admitted after founding Ibrat Debates, supported by the Youth Agency.

Suddenly, every second person is running a social project.

Don't get me wrong, it's great to pursue Zakovat or launch a meaningful social project!

But because most of you end up chasing the same activities, you will find it difficult to differentiate yourself from the pack.

Ignore the noise. What do YOU want to do?

Prof. Andrew Bailey’s Graduation Speech

Five years ago, Prof. Bailey convinced me to take the Politics, Philosophy, and Economics major. He’s one of the most dedicated and brilliant people I have met. Being taught by such incredible professors for four years was a blessing.

His speech is a tribute to Yale-NUS. It is Yale-NUS. It captures so much of what we have missed and will miss.

Some quotes:

“You are in your twenties staring down life after graduation. I am in my forties staring down a mid-life crisis.”

“There are lots of good things to want. The problem with wanting things is this: sometimes we get them.”

“It sucks to realize that this is the way of things. Because you know that the next time you get what you want, it won’t necessarily make you happy.”

“What do you want? Money? You’ll make money and lose it. To fix the world? I’m afraid the world would break again. Love? You know what happens next.”

“Of course, not everyone gets divorced, and sometimes we manage to hold on to our bitcoins.”

“I still make this prediction. Something you want and something you love will be taken from you.”

“Careless outsiders may guess the best of Yale-NUS will live on in some successor. We know better. This is nonsense. The college will be gone.”

“Here’s what we need. Not preachy advice. Not more things to want or ways to get them. We need comfort. Here and now. Solace.”

“In fellowship, losses are restored. And sorrows end.”

“Dear friends, you have been my solace. And I leave you with a blessing that you’ll find solace too.”

Takeaways from TikTok CEO's speech at Yale-NUS' Graduation:

1) The world’s changing rapidly
2) Technology's potential is boundless
3) The world's changing rapidly!?

It's commendable that Shou Zi Chew found the time, but as Mishael and others noted, his address felt AI-generated—repetitive, generic, and impersonal.

With TikTok's logo in the background, he mentioned the company several times. I started to hope he would offer some job positions to the recent Yale-NUS graduates on the spot.

Conversely, Prof. Bailey's speech captured the essence of Yale-NUS and our spirit. The community deserved a proper final word. And Prof. delivered! I’ll post it soon.

@scholarconnectuz is one of the most ambitious high-school research projects I have seen in a while.

I have heard very positive feedback about its impact so far, and I am proud that it is run by Freshman alumni.
