Whistle Stop Cafe owner Chris Scott, from Mirror, Alberta, says he is at least $6,000 out of pocket for covering the federal and provincial gas taxes himself, instead of passing them on to consumers for a day, to showcase what a truly prosperous Alberta should look like.
Scott's choice of day for the event led some to question if it was an April Fools' joke. But it was no joke—it also coincided with the day the federal government lifted the carbon tax. However, for Scott, “that’s really a drop in the bucket."
“If you look at what the Alberta government collects in road tax and what they spend on roads, you’ll see exactly why we don’t need it,” emphasized Scott, arguing that an Alberta without any gas taxes is entirely feasible.
"We’ve been supporting the Easterners long enough. I think it’s time to look after ourselves. To hell with them!" said one customer, in favor of Alberta's separation from Canada, while filling up multiple jerry cans.
