Illegal commercial goods, foodstuffs and unregistered vehicle seized

Under the supervision of the Illegal Trade Eradication Steering Committee, joint inspection teams led by the Customs Department are taking effective action against illegal trade under the law. A Myanmar national arriving from Malaysia on flight 8M 504/SF-3581 was found carrying foodstuffs without valid supporting documents, valued at approximately K2.8 million at Yangon International Airport on 14 April 2025. Similarly, another Myanmar national arriving from Thailand on the same flight number (8M 504/SF-3581) was found carrying one type of commercial item without valid documentation, with an estimated value of K10 million at the same airport on 17 April 2025. The total value of the two seizures amounted to K12.8 million. Authorities are taking action per Customs procedures.

Supervised by the Sagaing Region Illegal Trade Eradication Task Force, a combined team inspected Natlu Htaikpan Ward, Monywa, on 18 April 2025. The team seized one unlicensed Hijet, estimated to be worth K5 million. Legal action is being taken under the Import and Export Law.

In total, three separate cases involving the seizure of goods and an unregistered vehicle, valued at approximately K17.8 million, were recorded on 14, 17 and 18 April 2025. Such illegal imports can reduce the competitiveness of legitimate traders and cause significant revenue losses to the State. As a result, relevant authorities will intensify inspections and enforcement measures to prevent illegal import activities.

UMFCCI leads post-quake building assessments

The Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) has been providing relief supplies to quake survivors and conducting post-earthquake usability supplies in schools and other buildings.

UMFCCI and affiliated associations donated medicines, food and consumer goods to quake survivors in Mandalay through the Mandalay Region Chambers of Commerce and Industry on 15 April.

Before the beginning of the academic year, the federation also carried out building assessments in six earthquake-stricken primary schools and three high schools in Sagaing Region and helped maintain the buildings starting from the Thingyan holidays.

UMFCCI is carrying out rescue activities in collaboration with affiliated associations and partner organizations. The federation has also formed the UMFCCI Earthquake Relief and Rehabilitation Task Force to help those affected by the earthquake. It will link with local organizations in quake-hit regions to help the earthquake survivors.

Furthermore, it also announced that it welcomes well-wishers, businesspeople and domestic and international organizations to join the funding of the UMFCCI directly through contact numbers (09 776999920 and 09 776999940 of the Member Affairs Department, and 09 450200640 of Public Relations Department).

Myanmar’s mango yield plunges by 50% this year

Myanmar’s mango yield is down by 50 per cent this year amid domestic and foreign weak demand, according to the Khwanyo Fruit Trading Depot.

At present, Myanmar has started exporting mangoes to China, yet exporters cannot even cover the cost, facing losses.

“We exported mango in the early part of the season. Yet, a delay in transport degrades the quality of the mango and impacts shelf life. The fastest delivery is about three days. The mango is easily perishable due to environmental conditions, low input during cultivation and improper post-harvest handling methods. The first batch of the mango export did not cover transportation, basket cost and labour wages. Furthermore, there is a misunderstanding between growers and exporters regarding mango inferior quality. There were five trucks ahead of us. They fetched a pretty high price,” an official of the Khwanyo Fruit Trading Depot.

Officials of the Mandalay Region Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MRCCI) and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Dehong Prefecture discussed matters to facilitate Myanmar’s mango export to China at the MRCCI’s office in late 2024, in the presence of mango growers.

They highlighted the fast delivery of Myanmar’s mango to China through possible road channels, smooth customs clearance, and exploration of potential trade channels. Moreover, they coordinated on matters regarding trade barriers that exporters experienced on the Kengtung-Mongla-Dalo road channels, including tax and freight shipping time.

The traders are bracing for transport hurdles, such as rough roads and extreme weather conditions, that affect the quality of the fruits. Therefore, there seems to be no other option than Muse Road during the mango season, the Khwanyo Fruit Depot observed.

As a result of this, exporters face big challenges depending on the export channel and fruit quality, according to the Khwanyo Fruit Trading Depot.

The high cost of cultivation inputs batters growers. Last year, low use of cultivation inputs affected quality, causing postharvest diseases such as stem end rot and black spots in fruit.

Some traders did not even cover the cultivation cost due to the inferior quality of Seintalone mango.

Of about 200 mango varieties that originated in Myanmar, Seintalone, Shwehintha, Padamya Ngamauk, Yinkwe, and Machitsu varieties are primarily grown. The foreign market prefers Seintalone varieties.

Ayeyawady Region possesses the most extensive mango plantation acres, having about 46,000 acres. Bago Region is the second largest producer, with 43,000 acres, and Mandalay has 29,000 acres of mango. There are over 24,000 acres in Kayin State, over 20,400 acres in Shan State and over 20,000 acres in Sagaing Region, according to the association.

YGN palm oil wholesale reference rate remains stable

THE wholesale reference rate of palm oil set for the Yangon market stayed the same at K6,770 per viss for the straight three weeks (from 6 to 27 April), according to the Supervisory Committee on Edible Oil Import and Distribution.

The Supervisory Committee on Edible Oil Import and Distribution under the Ministry of Commerce has been closely observing the FOB prices in Malaysia and Indonesia, adding transport costs, tariffs and banking services to decide the wholesale market reference rate for edible oil on a weekly basis.

Despite the reference price, the market price is way too high.

To control overcharging, the Consumer Affairs Department under the Ministry of Commerce informed the consumers of lodging the complaints for overcharging through the call centre hotline in late August. The department urges consumers not to buy palm oil at high prices.

The Committee notified that any person who is involved in price gouging and oil storage to attempt market manipulation will face legal action under the Essential Goods and Services Law. The department is working together with the Myanmar Oil Dealers’ Association and the cooking oil importing companies to offer affordable rates of imported palm oil for consumers. The complaints for overcharging can be lodged over hotline 1535 of the call centre of the Consumers Affairs Department or sent to the Facebook page of the department and the region and state departments concerned. The domestic consumption of palm oil is estimated at one million tonnes per year. The local palm oil production is just about 400,000 tonnes. About 700,000 tonnes of palm oil are yearly imported through Malaysia and Indonesia to meet domestic demands.
