The bar chart compares how much money was expended on five different consumer items by French and British people in the year 2010.

Overall, people in France spent relatively more on computers and perfume, while those in the UK did so on the remaining goods. Additionally, in both countries, cars emerged as a major expense. Of particular note is that there was a noticeable difference in spending on cameras between the UK and France.

In detail, in Britain, people allocated a staggering £450,000 for cars as opposed to the French at £400,000. Spending on books, which ranked second, was higher in the UK than in France, with respective figures of 400,000 pounds and 300,000 pounds. As for cameras, the gap even widened further; the British allocated more than twice as much as the French, at £350,000.

On the other hand, the outlay on the other goods was higher in France. The gap in expenditure on computers was smaller, which amounted to just under 400,000 pounds and 350,000 pounds for France and Britain. Similarly, French people outspent their UK counterparts on perfume, with the former spending 200,000 pounds - about 50,000 pounds more than the British.

Although there is increased access to education, illiteracy still remains a major problem for a significant number of adults across the globe. These people might confront barriers regarding employment and have difficulty executing daily tasks. However, these issues can be tackled by government funding focused on adult education programs tailored to everyone's needs involved.

The first obvious disadvantage of adult illiteracy is limited job prospects. In today's competitive job market, not only does one have to acquire the ability to read and write, but digital knowledge also comes into play during the hiring process. Being deprived of these skills, one cannot secure stable employment, nor can they earn a decent salary to make ends meet. The employment options they will be left with are those offering minimum wages and unsafe or unhealthy working conditions. Another serious implication stemming from a lack of fundamental reading and writing skills is having a hard time handling daily activities such as reading road signs, understanding medication instructions, or supporting children's education. Consequently, these individuals might experience constant stress and depression, which may contribute to mental health issues or emotional distress.

To remedy the situation, governments would be wise to invest in education programs. First, those who are residing in deprived areas with no access to education should be prioritized. In these areas, governments can set up community learning centers where people can learn at their own pace, thereby bridging the education gap. Additionally, to increase their employment opportunities, specialized courses aimed at vocational training could be offered by governments. For example, in the US, every year thousands of illiterate adults receive classes where they are taught practical skills for diverse jobs. Resultantly, such government-subsidized classes help adults gain hands-on experience, making them more attractive to employers.

To conclude, illiteracy can bring about a number of challenges for adults. However, governments can minimize those issues effectively by establishing educational programs to equip them with the necessary skills.

Following this, aluminium cans are collected by garbage trucks, which deliver them to the recycling center.

Once at the facility, the cans are compressed into blocks, which are subsequently shredded. After this, the shredded aluminium is melted down to produce aluminium ingots. These solid blocks of aluminium are then thinned out using rollers. In the final step, before being distributed to vending machines, the aluminium is reconverted into beverage cans.

When it comes to the time allocated for housework, a reversal pattern can be observed. Notably, there is a negative correlation between the usage of the devices and the amount of time expended on housework.

In detail, though accounting for a relatively small figure, the proportion of households with refrigerators had soared by the final year. It stood at a mere 5% initially, which reached a chart-high of 100% in 1980, remaining constant thereafter. Similarly, just under a third households owned of vacuum cleaners in 1920. Thanks to an exponential rise, the percentage of for vacuum clean owners hit the peak of 100% as that of refrigerator ones in 2000, followed by a plateau. In contrast, the ownership figure for washing machines was somewhat erratic. It initially went up by 30% to reach 70% after four decades before dropping slightly to 65% in 1980, but it had bounced back to 75% by 2019.

As far as housework hours, the average weekly time on household tasks fell sharply from 50 hours to 20 hours between 1920 and 1960. From 1960 onwards, the decline in housework hours slowed down, with the figure ultimately reaching 10 hours at the end of the span in question.

Some people believe that what children watch on television influences their behavior. Others say that the amount of time spent watching television influences their behavior.

Some argue that it is television content that develops bad habits in children, but others suggest that screen time has a larger role to play. I, personally, share the view that both the content children consume and the time spent watching TV equally contribute to shape their personality.

On the one hand, a case can be made that the programs children are exposed to influence their behavior in the absence of proper parental supervision. This is because the majority of parents have a hard time in allocating time for their children thanks to the demands of modern life. In a family where both parents are breadwinners, it would be challenging to control what their children are watching. Since children are not psychologically and mentally mature enough, they are less likely to know how to sort out what is useful for them. Constant exposure to violence on TV might result in behavioral change in them. For example, should a large portion of the content make up aggressive scenes such as shooting and killing people, the chances are they commence imitating what they see on television. This, in turn, can desensitize them to violence; even if they witness such immoral acts in real life, they would perceive them as normal behavior.

Conversely, others subscribe to the idea that however positive the content is, the amount of time spent in front of screens affects children's behavior. First, excessive amount of time allocated to watching TV can limit children's ability to socialize. Having fewer chances to talk in person, they may group up lacking the skills needed to navigate face-to-face interaction, which is one the most crucial skills to succeed in the future. Additionally, irritable behavior in children can be attributed to long hours in front of the TV. Being immersed in what they see, they might stay up late, being deprived of getting adequate amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation can make children short-tempered, nervous individuals later in life.

To conclude, while the content of television programs plays a strong role in shaping children's behavior, the amount of time they spend watching TV is equally important. I, therefore, strongly believe that both factors, without proper guidance can have an adverse impact on a child's overall development.

Nowadays, some consumers are less influenced by advertising than in the past.

What are the reasons?
Is it a positive or negative development?


Although advertisements have become ubiquitous, their impact is not as powerful as it once was. This can be attributed to the growing awareness among consumers and the emergence of ad-blocking technologies. Personally, I see this trend in a positive light for some reasons.

There are a couple of factors that explain why ads have become less persuasive for modern-day consumers. One has to do with a growing number of individuals who appear to be developing immunity to advertising. In other words, once a new product is launched into the market and endorsed, people usually seek information across various online platforms prior to making a purchase. They visit the official website of the company that launched the product or shopping platforms such as Amazon or Ozon to read customer reviews, to check product ratings so that they can make an informed decision. Another reason is the advent of ad-blocking technologies. More specifically, many people find adverts annoying because they frequently interrupt videos or movies they are watching. This has led many to resort to using certain programs designed to eliminate advertisements. Resultantly, there has been a decline in the influence of advertising on purchasing decisions.

In my view, this change in attitudes can be considered a favorable development. First and foremost, the shift in consumer behavior can minimize consumerism, which is one of the leading contributors to environmental pollution. As is no secret, advertising agencies have always attempted to encourage people to buy more, often with slogans such as "The choice of the bold" or "Buy today, pay tomorrow". Such deceptive techniques have driven the majority to purchase even unnecessary items, which has had adverse implications for the environment. However, today people have started to become socially responsible consumers, which may yield ecological benefits down the line.

To sum up, in the present day, it has been challenging to convince all customers through advertising, as a large number of people have become tech-savvy. I deem this trend positive because it may help discourage materialistic culture.
