Occult origins of the rapture:

Margaret Macdonald, a young Scottish visionary, experienced a vision of a pre-tribulation rapture after falling ill in 1830. She was involved in occult practices such as charismatic speaking in tongues, automatic writing and levitation, to which Robert Norton wrote of her and a friend, “I have seen both her and Miss Margaret Macdonald stand like statues scarcely touching the ground, evidently supernaturally.”

In 1861, a lawyer named Robert Baxter published Macdonald’s vision, proving her as the source of John Darby’s new secret rapture doctrine.

Despite the word “rapture” not appearing anywhere in the Bible or in the entirety of Church history prior to 1830, Darby's rapture delusion cemented itself into evangelical consciousness as the great American myth.
