The accused declared the possibility of paying ‘couriers’ with money from Poles, which was donated for migrant aid,” said Prosecutor Rutyna. “Hard-earned money, given by people who believed it was going to a just cause, was actually used to finance human trafficking and organize illegal border crossings
Turns out, the only thing these activists were really delivering was cash—straight into the hands of smugglers.
But should we be surprised? For the modern left, reality takes a backseat to ideology. As long as it’s “anti-border,” “anti-national,” or “anti-Western,” they’ll support it—blindly. A shocking verdict with potential for devastating consequences: on March 7th, in what appears the latest act of the ever-ongoing fierce duel between the Italian government and the judiciary, the Corte di Cassazione, the highest court of appeal of the Italian judicial system, ruled that the government must compensate an illegal alien from Eritrea in the amount of 1600 euros. This ruling comes after the Eritrean immigrant had sued the Italian government on constitutional grounds for unlawful detention and deprivation of his personal liberty back in 2018, when, aboard the vessel Diciotti, he was denied disembarkation with other illegals for ten days by the Ministry of the Internal Affairs, at the time occupied by Matteo Salvini (a decision that cost him a trial, on the basis of the accusation of false imprisonment, from which he was recently acquitted but not definitely exculpated).
Besides the blatant contradiction between the two verdicts (on one hand the apparent legitimate conduct of the minister, but on the other still the acknowledgement of damage to the Eritrean man), the potential outcomes of such a reckless – if not utterly deranged – ruling must raise deep concerns, duly noticed by the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, who stressed that “in Africa perhaps millions of migrants are pushing (…) If we introduced the principle that these people have resources and financial compensation our finances would go to ruin”.
And, after all, the tragic irony is that, in this vulgar mockery of the law and of any form of right historically established by humanity, the judges may be right: the Italian Constitution, expression of the triumphant anti-fascist forces of the Second World War, guarantees any foreigner the same rights as a citizen, even when in flagrante delicto, as in the case of entering the country illegally, without regard for any superior matter of national security. These dangerously ambiguous principles often lead to extreme, and yet inherently constitutive, interpretations of the charter, which to the common sense can only sound demented. What it takes is just a few radical left-wing magistrates; and Italy is full of them.
