The oak trees had been there for 100,000 years, well planted in the loam, well watered, forming a beautiful forest. They were trees that liked their ease, and to spread comfortably, they left large spaces between them. Carried by the south winds, the pine seeds settled there. Dried by the journey, painful to look at, they were said to be the only survivors of terrible fires and other cataclysms; their entire family had perished. The oaks brought tears to their eyes, letting them settle in the humus. Today the forest has become a beautiful pine grove. On summer evenings, the pines laughingly tell the story of the terrible fires and the great fools of the oak who believed in them.
