Consumerism is leading people to fall into debt. There are some reasons for this new trend such as the influence of celebrities and social pressure while raising the public awareness of the detrimental effects of unhealthy shopping habits on the environment and their health can address this problem.

There are several reasons for this unprecedented trend. The main driver of consumerism is the celebrity endorsement. Many people want to imitate famous people on social media by purchasing clothes, electronic devices, and cars they are advertising on different social media websites even if they have not reached financial independence. These insatiable desires encourage them to borrow money or take a loan from the bank without considering how to pay it back. Some of my colleagues bought the latest generation of iPhone after the appearance of Haaland, their favorite football player, with an iPhone 16 on media. This purchase forced them to get other loans to cover basic necessities such as food and rent. Another contributing factor to the unnecessary shopping behavior would be the financial achievements of surrounding people. Most people buy different expensive products in order to prove their financial stability to family and friends. Because of this “so-called “futile competition, a lot of individuals are ending up in debt, spending years to pay them off.

However, the problems mentioned above can be resolved by taking a number of steps. Governments have to run various campaigns and commercials to increase the awareness of people about the repercussions of their actions on the environment. As long as they understand that software and manufacturing companies that they are promoting by buying their products are the main pollutants of the planet, Earth, they might stop doing so. People are highly likely to suffer from stress and even depression as they are no longer capable of meeting the daily needs of life. Comprehending the possible health risks of financial problems can dissuade people from making unnecessary purchases. This can be done by inviting people who faced similar issues in life to different public shows.

In conclusion, Governments should simply inform people about the ramifications of their actions to solve the problem of consumerism caused by celebrity endorsement and peer group pressure.

The bar chart details the proportion of three sectors in India's GDP between 1960 and 2000.

Generally, the figures for Industry and services rose to varying degrees while Agriculture witnessed a substantial decrease. Despite increasing consistently, the industry remained the lowest contributor to India’s GDP. Meanwhile, agriculture experienced the most drastic increase and became dominant, surpassing Agriculture in 1990.

The figures for agriculture represented the most dramatic change throughout. In the initial year, the contribution of Agriculture, the main contributor, made up 63%. After halving to around 30% by 1990, this considerable decline was followed by an eventual 15% drop to about 15% in 2000.

The remaining categories followed upward trends. In 1960, industry and service represented a nearly equal percentage at 18%. Since then, the gap between Industry and service sectors grew continuously. The former increased threefold to its peak of 64% by the end of the period, becoming the biggest contributor to India’s GDP while the latter saw a noticeable rise to about 25% before remaining stable till 2000.
