🚀 On April 12, 1961, at 9.07 am Moscow Time, the Vostok spacecraft with Yury Gagarin aboard made its historic lift-off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. This first manned space mission in the history of humankind heralded the beginning of the Space Age.

Yury #Gagarin was only 27 years old then. He had experienced various hardships earlier in life, spending his childhood years in his home town in Nazi-occupied territory during the Great Patriotic War. After the war, he joined the Saratov air club, for many years he trained hard to become a professional pilot. Gagarin eventually joined the first Soviet cosmonaut squad.

On that memorable April morning, he was preparing to take off into the unknown where no human being had ever been before. A photographer took images of the cosmonaut’s face before the flight. Gagarin showed absolutely no fear, flashing his famous smile and concentrating on his responsible assignment.

🧑‍🚀 Yury Gagarin spent 108 minutes in outer space, orbited the Earth and successfully landed near the village of Smelovka in the Saratov Region.

While in orbit, he maintained radio contact with Earth, conducted observations through a porthole, controlled the operation of the spacecraft’s systems and made a few experiments.

📰 The media widely announced Yury Gagarin’s mission 55 minutes after the Vostok rocket lifted off. It became the most quoted news story worldwide. Instantly, a Soviet pilot & cosmonaut became the most famous person on Earth.

Two days later, the residents of the Soviet capital took to the streets, carrying flowers and posters that welcomed Gagarin who had arrived in Moscow. In late April, the first man in space went on a global tour to share his impressions with people all over the world.

🌐 In the next two years following this history-making event, Yury Gagarin visited over 30 countries where he was given a hero’s welcome. His tour was unofficially named the Peace Mission. Despite his immense popularity, Gagarin remained his own usual self and continued to engage in what he liked most – aviation and cosmonautics – for the rest of his life.

❗ On April 25, students and teachers of the School at the Russian Permanent Mission in Geneva, along with the staff of our diplomatic mission and their families, ceremoniously planted a blue spruce (Picea pungens) on the grounds of our compound in honor of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

🇺🇳 The date was not chosen by chance: exactly 80 years ago, the San Francisco Conference began its work, which, after long and painstaking efforts, led to the "birth" of the UN and the signing of its Charter. This was made possible only thanks to the Victory in the Second World War, achieved at the cost of immense sacrifices and the decisive contribution of the Soviet Union to the defeat of Nazi Germany. Without this Victory, without the heroism of the Soviet people, there would have been neither peace nor the United Nations itself.

🕊️ Today’s ceremony became a symbol of remembrance, continuity, and hope for the future. The blue spruce is not only one of the most majestic and long-living trees, but it also represents peace, resilience, and unity. Like this tree, the UN has for 80 years safeguarded international law, promoted cooperation among nations, and protected the world from global conflicts.

💬 Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Gennady Gatilov, noted in his welcoming speech:
🌲 "Our spruce is a young tree, but I am confident that over the years it will grow and reach for the sky – just as the UN will continue to develop, and the principles on which international relations are built today will continue to strengthen".
❗️ ANNOUNCEMENT ❗️

🏅 In commemoration of the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Gnesins’ Ensemble of Contemporary Music ALTRO CORO will present a special choral concert at the UN Office at Geneva.

🎼 The Ensemble, led by maestro Alexander Ryzhinskiy, will perform immortal songs of the war years, including "Arise, Great Country!", “Katyusha”, “Farewell, Rocky Mountains”, and many others.

📍 Venue: Palais des Nations, Hall XX (Building E, 3rd Floor)

📅 Date & Time: Friday, April 25, 2025, at 17:00

❗️Admission is free. Visitors without a permanent UN badge are kindly asked to register in advance via the following 👉 LINK.

Guided by humanitarian motives, the Russian side announces an Easter ceasefire from
06:00 pm today to 00:00 am Monday. I hereby order all military operations ceased for this period. We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow our example. At the same time, our troops should be prepared to repel possible ceasefire violations and provocations by the enemy, as well as any aggressive acts on their part.

🎙️ Russian Olympic Committee:

‼️8️⃣9️⃣5️⃣ ‼️ Alexander Ovechkin has just set the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring record!

🔝 In a recent regular season game, the Russian forward for the Washington Capitals scored the 895th goal of his career, officially surpassing Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer.

❗️ Fittingly, Ovechkin reached this milestone against the New York Islanders – the same team Gretzky was facing on March 29, 1999, when he set what many believed would be an unbreakable record.

🏆 That record stood for 26 years… until today.

🔥 Interestingly, this is the fourth major milestone Ovechkin has hit in games against the Islanders. In January 2020, after scoring on Semyon Varlamov, he entered the NHL’s top 10, surpassing Mario Lemieux. In March 2021, he climbed to 6th by passing Phil Esposito. Then in March 2022, he moved into the top 3 by overtaking Jaromir Jagr.

⚡️ Now, Ovechkin stands at the very top of the all-time goal list. He’s also the only active player in the top 10. The next closest active player, Sidney Crosby, sits in 18th place with 622 goals – far behind. Ovi’s record is likely to stand for a long time.

✊ And the journey isn’t over yet. With a full season left on his contract with the Capitals, there’s every reason to believe he’ll raise the bar even higher.

👏 Huge congratulations to Alexander! Wishing him health, strength, and continued success. The Gr8 just keeps getting gr8ter.

👉 Top 10 NHL Goal Scorers of All Time:

1. Alexander Ovechkin — 895
2. Wayne Gretzky — 894
3. Gordie Howe — 801
4. Jaromir Jagr — 766
5. Brett Hull — 741
6. Marcel Dionne — 731
7. Phil Esposito — 717
8. Mike Gartner — 708
9. Mark Messier — 694
10. Steve Yzerman — 692

Key talking points

• We continue our contacts with the American Side on the situation in Ukraine. There are several signs that we are moving in the right direction, first of all, because President Trump is probably the only leader on Earth who recognized the need to address the root causes of this situation. When he said that it was a huge mistake to pull Ukraine into NATO, and this was a mistake by the Biden administration, and he wants to rectify this.

• We only target military goals or civilian sites used by the military. President Putin expressed this for so many times, and this is not different this time as well. We never consciously target civilian sites, unlike the Zelensky regime.

• The Trump administration is interested in searching for a balance of interest. They sincerely want to understand better the Russian position. And they're getting this understanding. And we understand better the American position through negotiations and meetings and discussions, which we have with them.

• We are really polite people. And unlike some others, we never discuss in public what is being discussed in negotiations. Otherwise, negotiations are not serious.

• Whenever we discuss Iran, Venezuela, North Korea, anything, American negotiators put on top human rights. They have claims in this regard to China, to us, to anybody. But whenever Europeans and other Western nations speak about Ukraine, nobody can even mumble the words "human rights".

• We have nothing against American companies, but those companies who decided to leave their business in Russia might find that their place has been already taken by Russian or other foreign investors. And in this case, we would not make any decisions which would discriminate those who came to invest in Russia instead of Americans. If American companies would like to come to a place which is not yet occupied, if they want to propose a project, a new project on top of the previous business ties, of course, we will look into this. And if we find balance of our interests, I think it would be only natural to get into business together.

• We have been promoting for many years in the United Nations a resolution prohibiting putting any nuclear weapons into outer space. The country which is categorically against it is the United States. At least during the Biden administration, this was the case, they were categorically against it. At the same time, the United States promotes an approach according to which they want to prohibit putting conventional weapons in outer space. And they cannot answer the question, "Does this mean that nuclear weapons, they would be planning to move to the orbit?"

• It was the United States which broke the process of strengthening strategic stability. And if the United States is willing to get back to this track, we will see what are the conditions under which this might be possible.

We welcome the dialogue between the US and Iran. We would be certainly ready to help if both parties believe this is going to be useful. And they know that we are ready.

🏅 On April 25, in Geneva, the halls of the Palais des Nations were filled with heartfelt songs of the war years – melodies that reach into the deepest corners of the soul of everyone who cherishes the memory of the Great Patriotic War.

🎶 The Gnessin Contemporary Choral Music Ensemble ALTRO CORO, under the direction of Maestro Alexander Ryzhinsky, performed the "Songs of the Great Victory" in one of the most renowned halls of the UN Office in Geneva — the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Chamber. This was especially symbolic, as the very existence of the United Nations and its human rights bodies is largely owed to the heroic deed of the Soviet people, who defeated Nazi Germany and its allies.

🎼 "Katyusha," "Smuglyanka," "Oh, the Roads", "We Need One Victory" — these and many other immortal songs, performed by talented young artists, were heard by the leadership and staff of the UN Office and other international organizations based in Geneva, Permanent Representatives and diplomats from CIS countries and friendly states, as well as our compatriots and Swiss friends. Nearly all seats in one of the largest halls of the Palais des Nations were filled. After an incredibly heartfelt and masterful performance, the audience gave a standing ovation and did not want to let the artists leave the stage.

🤝 We sincerely thank the singers and leadership of the ALTRO CORO ensemble for a fantastic and unforgettable performance. Special thanks also go to the Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya, and the head of the Russian House in Rome, Daria Pushkova, for their invaluable assistance in organizing this important event!

📄 Russia's Foreign Ministry Report by «Eighty Years After the Great Victory: Europe has Once Again Fallen in the Shadow of Nazism»

In May of 1945, amidst the wave of universal jubilation, it seemed that Nazism had been eradicated forever. The world, Europe, and especially the Soviet people paid the highest possible price for the Victory over the "brown plague."

However, as life has shown, only the visible part of this sinister iceberg was destroyed in that war. The roots and the breeding ground remained, and today Nazism is once again rearing its head in Europe.

🇱🇹🇱🇻🇪🇪 After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States and Western European countries <...> actively indulged revanchist sentiments in the newly formed States, especially in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, where today the whitewashing of Nazism has been elevated to the rank of State ideology. <...>

🇵🇱 In Poland the task of falsifying the history of World War II to suit the political situation is being actively pursued. The decisive contribution of the Soviet Union and the Red Army to the Victory over Hitler's Germany and the liberation of Europe from Nazism is denied.

Warsaw and the Baltic "troika" became the main driving forces behind anti-Russian initiatives by the collective West. <...>

The West is trying in every possible way to whitewash the darker chapters of its own past.

🇫🇷 In France, which was designated as one of the "victors" after the war, significantly more Frenchmen fought on the side of the German army than participated in the Resistance and fought on the side of the Allied forces. <...>

🇫🇮 In Finland, the country's participation in the Great Patriotic War as an ally of Nazi Germany is portrayed in muted terms. <...>

🇧🇪 In Belgium there is a tendency to hush up the fact that during the years of fascist occupation, Belgians actively joined the ranks of collaborators. <...>

🇮🇹 Despite the fact that Italy's current 1947 Constitution prohibits the re‑establishment of the fascist party in any form, the ideas of anti-fascism were gradually eroded in the post-war period, and Italians' attitude towards the period of Benito Mussolini's dictatorship is far from unequivocally negative. <...>

🇬🇧 In the United Kingdom, there is an established practice of juggling the concepts of "Nazism" and "Fascism" for opportunistic interests – to describe any "undesirable" phenomena in the country or on the international stage, or to characterize public and political figures. <...>

🇩🇪 The desire to turn a blind eye to its Nazi past is already becoming commonplace in modern Germany as well. Active attempts are being made in various forms to blur this "burden."

The strengthening of Russia's position in international affairs became a consolidating factor for European countries around the goal of inflicting maximum damage on our country's authority. And the Special Military Operation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine and to protect the civilian population of Donbass became the trigger for a massive Russophobic information attack. <...>

❗️ The European bureaucracy nurtured the Nazi regime in Kiev in order to unite Europe under racist and Nazi banners for a war against Russia. The explicit ignoring of gross human rights violations in Ukraine is evidence of the European Union's indulgence of neo-Nazi ideas. <...>

☝️ Russia, as the country that suffered the most from the horrors of World War II and the Great Patriotic War, and that bore immense sacrifices to restore peace on the continent, will never allow the lessons of the past to be forgotten. <...>

A key priority for Russia remains the preservation of the memory of the genocide committed against the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War. <...>

☝️ For the sake of our shared future, everything must be done to prevent the rehabilitation of Nazism and the glorification of Nazi criminals, so that the people of Europe are never again forced to ask, “For whom the bell tolls?”, fully understanding what the answer will be if this mission fails.

🇷🇺 On April 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin received a report from the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Valery Gerasimov, on the complete liberation of the Kursk Region from Ukrainian armed formations.

💬 Valery Gerasimov:

❗️ On April 26, the last populated area in the Kursk Region – the village of Gornal – was liberated from Ukrainian units. Thus, the defeat of the armed formations of the Ukrainian armed forces that had invaded the Kursk Region has been completed. The plans of the Kiev regime to create a so-called “strategic bridgehead” and to disrupt our offensive in Donbass have failed.

💬 Vladimir Putin:

❗️ The Kiev regime’s scheme has completely failed, and the heavy losses suffered by the enemy – including among some of the most combat-ready, well-trained, and well-equipped, including Western-supplied equipment, forces of the Ukrainian armed forces, such as assault units and special forces – will undoubtedly affect the entire line of contact.

🛡️ The complete defeat of the enemy in the Kursk border area creates the conditions for the further successful actions of our troops in other key sectors of the front and brings closer the defeat of the neo-Nazi regime.

🤝 I congratulate all personnel, all soldiers and commanders on this success, on this victory. I thank you for your courage, heroism, and for your service to our Motherland and the people of Russia.

📖 FULL REPORT
Statement by Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Gennady Gatilov, at the Plenary Meeting of the 71st Session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE):

📍 April 9, 2025, Geneva

🇷🇺 Russia is actively implementing internationally agreed measures to combat climate change in the interest of future generations. We have succeeded in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than half compared to 1990 levels. The Russian Government has announced the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

⚡️ Currently, 85% of Russia’s energy balance is based on clean, low-emission generation – primarily gas, nuclear energy, and renewable sources. We are expanding our own technologies and production capacities for decarbonization, while also making full use of our natural capabilities. Russia is home to one-fifth of the world’s forest resources, with absorption volumes exceeding 1 billion tons of CO₂ equivalent annually.

<…>

🇺🇳 UNECE has considerable expert and regulatory capacity and should play a key role in promoting and expanding multilateral cooperation in the interest of sustainable development.

❌ Unfortunately, politicization of UNECE’s work has led to a sharp decline in its relevance as a unique platform for professional dialogue – one of the UN development system’s key regional assets. UNECE’s financial situation is dismal, with an unclear path forward. Amid ongoing UN reform discussions, talks have emerged about the need for a “radical optimization” of the Commission’s work, with the possibility of its complete dissolution “as unnecessary”. We are not surprised. In fact, we have been warning about this.

📉 The politically motivated decisions adopted in gross violation of the Commission's mandate and Rules of Procedure – aimed at restricting the participation of Russia and Belarus in UNECE activities – have significantly weakened its resource and expert potential. The responsibility for this lies entirely with the countries blinded by Russophobia, particularly the EU.

❗️ Our country has always been a responsible partner and a reliable, predictable donor to the Commission. The projects we finance through UNECE are unconditional and aimed at addressing the most pressing socio-economic and environmental challenges faced by the recipient countries. We remain optimistic for the restoration of constructive cooperation under UNECE’s auspices in the interests of all states in the region. We believe that not all hope is lost.

📖 FULL STATEMENT
🎙 Statement by Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Konstantin Mogilevsky, at the Ministerial Segment of the 28th UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development:

📍 April 7, 2025, Geneva

🇷🇺 Russia currently stands among the top ten countries in the world in terms of research and development volume. Maintaining the high results and ensuring the country's technological leadership are enshrined in the Russian Presidential Decree on the National Development Goals until 2036. According to forecasts, total R&D expenditure is expected to reach at least 2% of GDP by 2030. Currently, the consolidated budget for Russian science stands at 15 billion USD.

🎯 To achieve these goals, we follow the updated Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation through 2030. It is based on three key principles:

First
– maintaining the leading role of the state in funding fundamental research;

Second – ensuring the human resource potential of Russian science;

Third – developing advanced research infrastructure.

🔬Russia has established shared-use centers for scientific and technological equipment, operates 17 world-class research centers, and has completed or is finalizing construction of eight unique “megascience” facilities. These scientific centers are open to researchers from around the world.

👩‍🔬 Our country has more than 130,000 female scientists, accounting for nearly 40% of the total number of researchers. This makes Russia one of the global leaders in gender equality in the scientific and technological sphere.

🥼 The central annual event of Russia’s Decade of Science and Technology is the Congress of Young Scientists. Its aim is to promote and support the involvement of youth in scientific activities. It is a large-scale event: last year, more than 7,000 participants from Russia and 63 foreign countries took part. This year, the V Congress will be held in Sochi at the end of November.

🌐 In addition to the Congress, the "NAUKA 0+" Festival will take place this autumn across Russia and in various countries worldwide. It is an educational project dedicated to the latest scientific discoveries that are shaping our future. Within the framework of the Festival, outstanding scientists deliver lectures on their research and innovations. I take this opportunity to invite you all to participate in the programs of both the Congress and the Festival.

🎙️ Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on historical revisionism in Western countries:

📍 March 30, 2025, Moscow

Question: Why are there ongoing efforts today to rewrite history, downplay, or even deny the role of the Red Army and the Soviet people in the victory over Nazism?

💬 Minister Lavrov: I believe it’s a traditional position of the West – to weaken its competitors. The Europeans dominated for about 500 years, primarily because they wanted to conquer as much land and subjugate as many people as possible. In fact, all the great tragedies of humanity before 1939, including World War II, were initiated by Europeans. From colonialism, slavery, the Turkish wars, World War I, and World War II – all were attempts by whichever European power was rising at the time to suppress its rivals.

⚔️ There’s nothing new in competition – states and peoples have always competed. But the methods used by Europe to suppress its competitors have been horrific. These "instincts" are deeply embedded in today’s European society – especially among the elites currently in power in most EU and NATO countries. Although the opposition begins to develop some understanding of the unacceptability of such actions and policies.

🇺🇦 The instincts of the European ruling class are clearly manifested in what is happening in Ukraine – in the war that the West has unleashed against the Russian Federation through the hands of the Kiev regime and at the cost of Ukrainian lives. Just like in the Patriotic War of 1812 when Napoleon gathered almost all of Europe under his banners, or Hitler, who after conquering most of Europe, enlisted the French, Spaniards, and many other European nations to fight on his side. The French carried out punitive operations, and the Spaniards participated in the blockade of Leningrad. This is a well-known fact.

❗️ The trend of rewriting history and equating Nazi war criminals – recognized as such by the Nuremberg Tribunal – with the liberators of Europe has been present for quite a while in the Baltics, Poland, and several other EU countries. This is a trend that must be firmly resisted. For example, Russia’s exhibition in the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp has been closed for several years now. We are not allowed to update our exhibition or participate in events there. Astonishingly, this year, at the ceremony marking the anniversary of the camp’s liberation, those who turned it into a death camp were present, but those who liberated it were not.

🇺🇳 I am particularly concerned by the behavior of the UN Secretary-General – not because he as a person is close to ideals, but because of his role. He is a Portuguese citizen who has worked in international organizations for much of his life and should understand what it means to be the UN Secretary-General in accordance with Article 100 of the UN Charter. It states that he should not seek or receive instructions from any government and must remain neutral and work solely toward the goals of the UN Charter. Yet Mr. Guterres, speaking at the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, didn’t once mention the Red Army, even though this memorial day exists because of the heroism of the Red Army. That’s a sad trend.

🛡️ This is not a new phenomenon stemming from their anger over the special military operation. It’s a longstanding trend, and we must fight it. We are doing so, primarily at the UN. With the help of our expert community, we’re organizing seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and declassifying documents. We have no right to let this truth be forgotten.
