Benito Mussolini's father, Alessandro Mussolini, was associated with Mikhail Bakunin's Anarchist International in Italy during the 1870s. The anti-fascist historian Gaetano Salvemini observed that Mussolini's early socialist leanings were closer to anarchism than to Marxism. Mussolini's ideology, which also incorporated elements of revolutionary syndicalism, was deeply influenced by Georges Sorel's advocacy for revolutionary violence instead of the historical determinism of Marxism.

Under the Russian monarchy, there were no direct taxes. Taxes were collected from the villages, rather than from the people individually. The people worked land that was collectively owned (although they also had private property), and taxes were taken out of the excess produce of the community.
