Friday after PASSION SUNDAY
FEAST OF THE SEVEN DOLOURS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
(The same continued)
LAUDS
Virgo virginum præclara
VIRGIN of all virgins best !
Listen to my fond request :
Let me share thy grief divine ;
Let me, to my latest breath,
In my body bear the death
Of that dying Son of thine.
Wounded with His every wound,
Steep my soul till it hath swoon’d
In His very blood away ;
Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
Lest in flames I burn and die,
In His awful Judgment day.
Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
Be thy Mother my defence,
Be Thy Cross my victory ;
While my body here decays,
May my soul Thy goodness praise,
Safe in Paradise with Thee.
Lyra Catholica: Containing All the Breviary and Missal Hymns. Rev. Fr. Edward Caswall, M.A., translator. (1849)

JESUS RISEN
1.
All hail ! dear Conqueror ! all hail !
Oh what a victory is Thine !
How beautiful Thy strength appears,
Thy crimson Wounds, how bright they shine !
2.
Thou camest at the dawn of day ;
Armies of souls around Thee were,
Blest spirits, thronging to adore
Thy Flesh, so marvellous, so fair.
3.
The everlasting Godhead lay
Shrouded within those Limbs Divine,
Nor left untenanted one hour
That sacred Human Heart of Thine.
4.
They worshipped Thee, those ransomed souls,
With the fresh strength of love set free ;
They worshipped joyously, and thought
Of Mary while they looked on Thee.

HYMN for EASTER-SUNDAY
O filii et filiæ
YE sons and daughters of the Lord !
The King of glory, King ador’d,
This day Himself from death restor’d.
All in the early morning grey
Went holy women on their way,
To see the tomb where Jesus lay.
Of spices pure a precious store
In their pure hands those women bore,
To anoint the sacred Body o’er.

EASTER SUNDAY
Victimæ Paschali laudes
Sequence
FORTH to the paschal Victim, Christians, bring
Your sacrifice of praise :
The Lamb redeems the sheep ;
And Christ, the Sinless One,
Hath to the Father sinners reconcil’d.
Together, Death and Life
In a strange conflict strove ;
The Prince of Life, who died,
Now lives and reigns.
What thou sawest, Mary, say,
As thou wentest on the way.
I saw the tomb wherein the Living One had lain ;
I saw His glory as He rose again;
Napkin and linen clothes, and Angels twain :
Yea, Christ is risen, my hope, and He
Will go before you into Galilee.
We know that Christ indeed has risen from the grave :
Hail, thou King of Victory !
Have mercy, Lord, and save.

HYMN for EASTER-SUNDAY
O filii et filiæ
(continued)
Then straightway one in white they see,
Who saith, “Ye seek the Lord; but He
Is ris’n, and gone to Galilee."
This told they Peter, told they John;
Who forthwith to the tomb are gone,
But Peter is by John outrun.
That self-same night, while out of fear
The doors were shut, their Lord most dear
To his Apostles did appear.
But Thomas, when of this he heard,
Was doubtful of his brethren’s word;
Wherefore again there comes the Lord.
“Thomas, behold my side,” saith He;
“My hands, my feet, my body see,
And doubt not, but believe in Me.”
When Thomas saw that wounded side,
The truth no longer he denied;
“Thou art my Lord and God !" he cried.
Oh, blest are they who have not seen
Their Lord, and yet believe in Him !
Eternal life awaiteth them.
Now let us praise the Lord most high,
And strive His name to magnify
On this great day, through earth and sky :
Whose mercy ever runneth o’er;
Whom men and Angel Hosts adore;
To Him be glory evermore.

JESUS RISEN
Hymn
(continued from above)
5.
And Thou, too, Soul of Jesus ! Thou
Towards that sacred Flesh didst yearn,
And for the beatings of that Heart
How ardently Thy love did burn.
6.
They worshipped, while the beauteous Soul
Paused by the Body's wounded Side :—
Bright flashed the cave,— before them stood
The Living Jesus Glorified.
7.
Down, down, all lofty things on earth,
And worship Him with joyous dread !
O Sin ! thou art outdone by love !
Death ! thou art discomfited !
8.
Ye Heavens, how sang they in your courts,
How sang the angelic choirs that day,
When from His tomb the imprisoned God,
Like the strong sunrise, broke away ?
9.
Oh I am burning so with love,
I fear lest I should make too free ;
Let me be silent and adore
Thy glorified Humanity.
10.
Ah ! new Thou sendest me sweet tears ;
Fluttered with love, my spirits fail,—
What shall I say? Thou knowst my heart ;
All hail ! dear Conqueror ! all hail !
~ Frederick William Faber, D.D. Hymns (1861)

HYMN ~ Feast of the Annunciation
Quis te canat mortalium
'Twas not thy guileless faith alone,
That lifted Thee so high ;
’Twas not thy pure seraphic love,
Or peerless chastity :
But, oh ! it was thy lowliness,
Well pleasing to the Lord,
That made Thee worthy to become
The Mother of the Word.
Oh, Loftiest !—whose humility
So sweet it was to see !
That God, forgetful of Himself,
Abas’d Himself to Thee !
Praise to the Father, with the Son,
And Holy Ghost, through Whom
The Word eternal was conceiv’d
Within the Virgin’s womb.

This is the day which the Lord hath made:
Let us be glad and rejoice therein.
The earth trembled and was still, when God arose in judgment.
Blessed and Happy Easter to you all!
Let us be glad and rejoice therein.
The earth trembled and was still, when God arose in judgment.
Blessed and Happy Easter to you all!
