watching the LOST HIGHWAY by David Lynch at DyVy Movie Club on Mar 28
Lost Highway is a 1997 surrealist neo-noir horror film directed by David Lynch, who co-wrote the screenplay with Barry Gifford. It stars Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, and Balthazar Getty. The narrative follows a musician (Pullman) who begins receiving unmarked videotapes of his home before he is abruptly convicted of murdering his wife (Arquette). While imprisoned, he mysteriously disappears and is replaced by a young mechanic (Getty) leading a different life.
The film's surreal narrative structure has been likened to a Möbius strip, while Lynch has described it as a "psychogenic fugue" rather than a conventionally logical story. The film's soundtrack was produced by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, featuring an original score by Angelo Badalamenti and Barry Adamson as well as contributions from Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, and the Smashing Pumpkins.
Movie club experd this time: Natalka, a theatre director and actress

People far and wide have tried to "understand" the works of David Lynch, and have failed to do so. At the same time they may have succeeded all the same.
The way I see it, his art, while following a certain set of momentary personal ideas & motives, has always been pervaded by & a celebration of, one specific idea; the idea that art is a gateway to embrace life & death in the whole spectrum of experience, deeply in harmony with the natural flow of all things - a way to understand the one true thing that there is to understand - that we don't understand. That we cannot ever understand life & death. That we can only e x p e r i e n c e it.
David Lynch was not only one of the greatest artists of modern times, to me he was a symbol of solace. Hearing, or reading his words always made me feel strangely at ease with the world. Knowing that, if people like him (and of course there is, was, only one David Lynch) exist among mankind, all is not lost, no matter how many antitheses to him do walk the earth.
His art will be timeless.
Thank you for everything David & may your spirit be timeless as well.

Maksym Kryvtsov (UKR) - I will get my life back (perf. by Donna Frose (Canada)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTywFGfOipI
“I will get my life back
I promise”
it's written with a marker on a wall of a popular mall in Kyiv
they have coffee and cakes there and trendy clothes
necklaces and music and balconies with incredible view
I saw
the fog embrace a skyscraper
quietly and tender.
“Love does not exist”
it’s written on the wall of the same mall on another floor
nor sea does not exist
or air does not exist
dreams do not exist
nor do I
but the coffee is good here
somebody wrote below those words:
“Who made you think so, sunshine?”
you know, I will tell you who:
the swamp which you have to wade to get
to the field fortification from the battle position
the mines which explode nearby
the winter which strangles you hard
the human parts thrown around
lying lost in the field
grotesquely and untidily
the nightmare which makes you cry out loud
the rain when you have to wait for several days before you get changed
and the sunshine
hiding in the basement
because of the air raid alert
really
who made you think so, sunshine?
A short leave
several days including those spent on the way
I meet with my friends
make things out of clay
bake a cheesecake for the first time in two years
it didn’t get too good
together with a friend, a girl,
we observe
the winter as a cat catch outside streets as a mouse
and holding
I can breathe
I see a girl cross the street running
with a big skinny dog on a leash
the top floors of the old housing blocks
emerge here and there
as butterfly swimmers
Christmas lighting in windows
a bit more of this
and I will want to become a part of a normal city again
to walk a big dog
to make fried eggs
to drink coffee in lovely bookstore cafes with tall bookshelves
it’s dangerous
it’s very dangerous
quiet life is a sickness
get those thoughts out of your head
throw as used shoe covers
run away from here
to your field fortification
to your swamp
to your mines
I will get my life back
will I get my life back?
I promise.

watching MULHOLLAND DRIVE, one of David Lynch's finest at DyVy Movie Club on Apr 11
Mulholland Drive is a 2001 surrealist neo-noir mystery art film written and directed by David Lynch. Its plot follows an aspiring actress (Naomi Watts) who arrives in Los Angeles, where she befriends a woman (Laura Harring) who is suffering from amnesia after a car accident. The film follows several other vignettes and characters, including a Hollywood director (Justin Theroux) who encounters mob interference while casting for his latest film. Lynch's tagline for the film is "a love story in the city of dreams".
The surrealist narrative has left the film's events open to interpretation. Lynch declined to offer an explanation, leaving audiences, critics, and even the film's own cast to speculate on its meaning.
Mulholland Drive earned Lynch the 2001 Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Director, as well as nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director for the film. The film boosted Watts' Hollywood profile considerably.
Movie club experd this time: Anton, a photographer, a DP, and visualist whose visual style is as weird as David Lynch's movies themselves)))

watching CIVIL WAR movie at our DyVy Movie Club this Friday
(directed by Alex Garland)
Apr 04 (Fri) 19:00
Try Teatry Hub (3 Simi Brodskykh, Shuliavka)
admission - 150uah (can be paid at the door)
review from our good friend and frequent visitor Captain Kyiv:
"When I watched this movie for the first time I wasn´t very impressed. Alex Garland has his reputation as an interesting director but here something definitely went wrong. And I believe that something started with the script. This is purely the case when the trailer is more interesting than the movie.
Still the actual story - civil war inside the United States of America - is now viewed in a totally new light (considering the new US administration and their actions). Plus there are several scenes from that movie that are stuck in my memory forever (interrogating the refugees, assaulting the White House, etc)
So I'm going. They show CIVIL WAR this Fri night at DyVy Movie Club Kyiv"

Theatre is there when you speak from the stage about something that you love and something that you care about. And if it resonates with the audience then the magic of the Theatre happens.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN UKRAINE is exactly that.
- theatre performance created from verbatim stories of real Ukrainian refugees.
- theatre performance that combines evacuation train, German town, Lviv and Mariupol
- theatre performance that found its shape in the freezing cold of Borodyanka
And yet the theatre performance that entertains and makes you smile and teaches you and asks your advice. Theatre performance after which you want to hug.
In our opinion - the best reflection on russian-ukrainian war the Theatre can make

watching the complete feature film COFFEE AND CIGARETTES at DyVy Movie Club on Mar 21
Coffee and Cigarettes is the title of three short films and a 2003 feature-length anthology film by independent film director Jim Jarmusch. The feature film consists of 11 short stories which share coffee and cigarettes as a common thread, and includes the earlier three short films.
The film is composed of a comic series of short vignettes shot in black and white built on one another to create a cumulative effect, as the characters discuss things such as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the 1920s, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide – all while sitting around drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. The theme of the film is absorption in the obsessions, joys, and addictions of life, and there are many common threads between vignettes, such as the Tesla coil, medical knowledge, the suggestion that coffee and cigarettes don't make for a healthy meal (generally lunch), cousins, The Lees (Cinqué and Joie, and a mention of Spike Lee), delirium, miscommunication, musicians, the similarities between musicianship and medical skill, industrial music, acknowledged fame, and the idea of drinking coffee before sleeping in order to have fast dreams. In each of the segments of the film, the common motif of alternating black and white tiles can be seen in some fashion. The visual use of black and white relates to the theme of interpersonal contrasts, as each vignette features two people who disagree completely yet manage to sit amicably at the same table.
Starring: Roberto Benigni, Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, Alfred Molina, Bill Murray

Для англомовного театрального проекту ProEnglish Theatre в Києві шукаємо:
двох хлопців-підлітків 14-17 років❗️
Важливо:
- вільне володіння англійською
- попередній акторський досвід
- мають вміти грати на гітарі і співати (we're singing The Beatles there!)
В планах - створити повноцінну виставу "Me Norm" до репертуару ProEnglish Theatre of Ukraine, закордонні гастролі та фестивалі.

Marina Abramović - Walk Through Walls: A Memoir
“I had experienced absolute freedom–I had felt that my body was without boundaries, limitless; that pain didn’t matter, that nothing mattered at all–and it intoxicated me.”In 2010, more than 750,000 people stood in line at Marina Abramovic’s MoMA retrospective for the chance to sit across from her and communicate with her nonverbally in an unprecedented durational performance that lasted more than 700 hours. This celebration of nearly fifty years of groundbreaking performance art demonstrated once again that Marina Abramovic is truly a force of nature. The child of Communist war-hero parents under Tito’s regime in postwar Yugoslavia, she was raised with a relentless work ethic. Even as she was beginning to build an international artistic career, Marina lived at home under her mother’s abusive control, strictly obeying a 10 p.m. curfew. But nothing could quell her insatiable curiosity, her desire to connect with people, or her distinctly Balkan sense of humor–all of which informs her art and her life. The beating heart of Walk Through Walls is an operatic love story–a twelve-year collaboration with fellow performance artist Ulay, much of which was spent penniless in a van traveling across Europe–a relationship that began to unravel and came to a dramatic end atop the Great Wall of China.Marina’s story, by turns moving, epic, and dryly funny, informs an incomparable artistic career that involves pushing her body past the limits of fear, pain, exhaustion, and danger in an uncompromising quest for emotional and spiritual transformation. A remarkable work of performance in its own right, Walk Through Walls is a vivid and powerful rendering of the unparalleled life of an extraordinary artist.
the book itself is in the commentaries. Have a nice read
