These things are slowly being released. All things I’ve said here and to a lot of people. Without even being involved. But from experience.
1. ATC understaffed and one personnel was operating both positions at once in the tower. Unacceptable.
2. Flight crew size for the UH-60 was normal (as I’ve said from experience in standard training missions) with two pilots and one CE (which does unfortunately lend to the fact that clearance to ONLY one side of the aircraft is covered).
3. Clear nights are great but whether with NVGs or not with NVGs (which decrease field of view by 50-60%), lights in highly populated cities, lights blend. It is possible they couldn’t see the plane and their lights because at a distance it is hard in dense areas because it blends with buildings, towers, cars etc. not an excuse. But it is a possibility.
4. Request for VISUAL SEPARATION was granted by ATC to UH-60. Comms between tower and Blackhawk were confirmed. Maybe they thought they saw the plane. Maybe they didn’t.
5. Airspeed and altitude was normal for that traffic pattern and training route along Potomac.
6. Airplane approach speed clocked somewhere between 150-175 mph or 140-155 knots.
7. Blackhawk traffic pattern speed at low level cruise for that pattern is somewhere between 80-100 knots.
8. The presidents assessment of opinion on how and why it was solely the blackhawks fault because he “has helicopters that can go up or down and turn” was reckless and irresponsible. Terrible press conference. (See? I can be objective).
Airspeed differential is huge. Much more ground covered at a much faster speed.
If it turns out to be true that ATC was understaffed, over worked and possibly inexperienced - the folks screaming that a maneuverable aircraft like a UH-60 Blackhawk SHOULD have turned or gone up or down or slowed down, or whatever, are speaking out of turn. I’m sorry. You simple don’t understand what you don’t understand or have never done.
Analogy time: pedal your bicycle out onto and cross an interstate freeway with trucks going 80mph. Pretend that the crossing guard has given you permission to cross the interstate. Then at the last minute you see the semi that’s about to destroy you and turn away.
Tell me what your reaction will be. Let me know how that works out for you. You have zero reaction time or possibility of evading disaster at that point.
The sudden climb shown at the end of 100-150 feet was probably an “oh sh*t” moment because they couldn’t tell altitude differential.
Mistakes, ATC or pilot error. Doesn’t matter. But these are things I’ve said since the moment the news broke. And it will come out as the investigation continues.
Stop pushing conspiracies. Please. The aircraft was manned. Crew member names will be released or have already been after investigations. The aircraft was not autonomously controlled. This sort of thing is so out of hand. The conspiracy mindset I can understand based off the lack of trust in the government. But this is not one of those times.
