‘I think the most important thing is that we do feel like we belong here’

Learn the story of the Shutzmans, a happy family of nine, who did the one thing most Americans would least expect – they moved to Russia.

Despite fears of being discriminated against, expecting people to be angry with them all the time, or even being approached by the FSB, they found Russia to be a safe haven where people are very nice – not at all depressed and horrible, as shown in American movies.

2 words Russians struggle the most to spell in 2025 😱

The words ‘correspondent’ and ‘professor’ (‘корреспондент’ и ‘профессор’) turned out to be the most difficult for Russians to spell.
On April 5, the annual ‘Totalny Diktant’ (‘Total Dictation’) campaign was held in Russia, in which a whopping 1.3 million people took part! Under dictation, they had to write down a given text, prepared by writer Marina Moskvina. And then, a special commission checked for errors in spelling and punctuation.

This year, it turned out that the most frequent mistakes were in the words ‘correspondent’ and ‘professor’!
Many people remembered that there are double consonants in them, but were confused about where exactly they should be put.
Also, as the organizers say, other words that caused the most difficulties in writing included: ‘превращения’ (‘transformations’) and ‘экскаватор’ (‘excavator’), which some people mixed up with ‘эскалатор’ (‘escalator’).
Do you remember how to write them correctly?

How the USSR got rid of Stalin cult of personality

Stalin’s cult of personality dominated for almost 20 years. Films, paintings, songs, books, newspaper articles and monuments – all this worked to glorify the ‘Father of Nations’.

The first words of condemnation of the cult were spoken immediately after Stalin's death in 1953. The new leadership of the country abandoned the glorification of one leader in favor of glorifying the Central Committee of the Party as a collegial governing body.

Stalin began to be cautiously criticized as an incompetent theoretician of Marxism-Leninism and the number of his mentions in the press sharply decreased. De-Stalinization entered into full force after Nikita Khrushchev published a report titled ‘On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences’ at the 20th Congress of the Communist Party in February 1956.

The ‘Father of Nations’ in particular was blamed for the mass terror of the late 1930s – early 1950s. In addition, the issue of rehabilitation of the repressed was raised.

“Khrushchev’s goal was… to get rid of the ghost of the dictator over all of them, whom they were all afraid of. To convince those around him that he… would be able to ensure… ‘the principles of collective leadership’… and guarantee with his word to the party apparatus that repressions of this level would not be repeated,” says historian Kirill Boldovsky.

During the period of de-Stalinization in the USSR, streets, parks, factories, institutes and entire cities named after the leader were renamed en masse, while monuments erected to him were torn down. His body was also secretly removed from the mausoleum and buried near the Moscow Kremlin wall.

With Leonid Brezhnev’s rise to power in the USSR in 1964, the level of criticism of the cult of personality noticeably decreased. His figure and the policies he pursued even began to be treated more balanced.

Easter 2025: Why Catholics & Orthodox Christians celebrate it on the same day

In 2025, Easter will be celebrated on the same date for all Christians, on April 20. Last time the date coincided in 2017, however, the next time, it will occur as soon as in 2028. On average, this is what happens every three years.
The Resurrection of Christ celebration in Christian churches is a passing holiday, which means its date changes every year. The day of the Christian Easter, as well as its prototype, the Old Testament Passover (Pesach), is determined by the lunar calendar.

Back in the 4th century, before the Christian Church divided, it was adopted to celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the spring full moon. That is, the first full moon after March 21, the day of the vernal equinox.
The first Sunday after the spring full moon always falls on different days. There is also another thing to consider. The Russian Orthodox Church calculates this date on the Julian calendar, while, since the 16th century, Catholics observe the new Gregorian calendar. And the difference between them amounts to 13 days.

Despite the fact that Russia officially switched to the Gregorian calendar after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, the Church in Russia is still oriented to the old, Julian calendar.
In 2024, the difference between Easter was more than a month! Catholics (as well as, for example, the Armenian Apostolic Church) celebrated the holiday on March 31, while the Russian Orthodox Church celebrated it on May 5.

Where was the last church of the Nicholas II family located?

In the Winter of 1908, Nicholas II paced the clearing on the outskirts of the park in Tsarskoye Selo. He did this with all seriousness: The monarch was determining the size of the future church. Less than a year later, in the presence of his family, he laid the first stone in the foundation of the Feodorovsky Cathedral.

The last Romanovs lived permanently in the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo from 1905. But, surprisingly, there was no house church there. Chance helped: the regiments of the emperor's personal guard – His Imperial Majesty's Own Convoy and the Life Guards Combined Infantry Regiment of His Imperial Majesty, which were stationed next to the Alexander Palace, also needed their own church.

The first architect of the cathedral was Alexander Pomerantsev, author of the legendary GUM department store on the Red Square. But, his project turned out to be too large-scale, so the tsar settled for a more modest version by Vladimir Pokrovsky.

Soon, a cathedral built in the spirit of Old Russian architecture appeared in Tsarskoye Selo. Externally, it resembled the Annunciation Cathedral of the Kremlin, and the interior decoration resembled paintings of ancient churches of Yaroslavl and Rostov the Great. The upper church was consecrated in the name of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, who was considered the patroness of the Romanov House. And the lower, cave church, in the name of St. Seraphim of Sarov.

In 1914, the church received the status of the Sovereign’s church – it became the house church of the Romanovs. It was also a regimental church. Therefore, different entrances and even different places inside were intended for them. A special “royal room” was set up in the lower church. Ordinary parishioners could only enter it on major holidays and only by special invitation.
