During his speech at an Israeli officers graduation ceremony today, PM Benjamin Netanyahu demanded a full demilitarization of southern Syria from troops of the new Syrian regime in the Quneitra, Daraa, and Suweyda provinces.
“We will not allow forces from the HTS organization or the new Syrian army to enter the area south of Damascus," Netanyahu said, referring to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) forces, the offshoot of Al-Qaeda in Syria that recently toppled the Assad government.
Israeli forces have occupied swaths of Syrian territory and established several military bases across southern Syria since the HTS came into power.

Tomorrow is the day of the rebirth of the Lebanese resistance.
Tomorrow, the body of Sayyed Hassan will be mourned, but what equation in Lebanon is supposed to be disrupted by this funeral? Hezbollah, with all its valor, has suffered heavy military-political blows over the past 15 months, and for many, its story is over.
Perhaps the reason for such perceptions was its overwhelming magnitude in the eyes of others. Hezbollah, in the years following 2006, had grown so large that it no longer fit within the small frame of Lebanon.
Hezbollah had one hand in politics, another on the trigger of a weapon, and a third outstretched to defend Lebanon’s economic interests against aggressors. It roamed freely south of the Litani, disregarding the 2006 ceasefire agreement, and considered relocating the Litani River easier than retreating north of it.
But a war—especially with Zionist beasts under an equation not designed by Hezbollah—was not something that could be easily overcome. Because Hezbollah insisted on preserving its essence, it entered the fray on October 8, albeit with some reservations. What mattered was that it opened a front in support of Gaza, just 24 hours later.
The point, however, is this: Hezbollah’s weapons in the tunnels, its political influence in Beirut, its structure from Bekaa to the south, and its leader’s charisma in the heart of Dahiyeh had become a veil over the most essential aspect of its power: the people who stood by Hezbollah.
The past 15 months, which began with strikes on Hezbollah’s weapons arsenal, continued with the martyrdom of its leaders, and ultimately led to its political constraints, have finally provided an opportunity for that fresh and vibrant root—which bore the tree of this resistance—to reveal itself once again: the people.
The funeral of the Sayyed is precisely where it will do its work. The people who have stood by their covenant with the Sayyed will rise once more, this time without the shadow of weapons or politics in Lebanon.
