Enemy bullets whistled around, one of them pierced the flagpole, splitting it. Egorov's trousers were shot through, Kantariy's cap. But they had done their duty.

In the Berlin night sky, the spring wind, thickly infused with gunpowder smoke, slowly unfurled and fluttered the red canvas of the Victory Banner."
