Junzi Imperialis is an extinct species of gibbon found in China that was believed to be alive around 2,000 years ago. The only evidence of it’s existence was found in the tomb of an ancient noblewoman named Lady Xia, and it’s discovery could represent the first known post glacial extinction of an ape/any continental primate.
While it is a remarkable discovery, its extinction represents the underestimated effect humans have had on primate population loss, and how long humans have been keeping primates as pets.
